In memory of

William McKelvey

1943 - 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of William “Bill” McKelvey on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Kirkland and District Hospital, at the age of 82.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his children: son Robbie (Athena) and daughter Tracy (Todd); his five cherished grandchildren, Austin (Coral), Ella, Tianna, Jamoss, and Adam; and his newest joy, great-grandson Rhett. He is also survived by his sister, June Hodge (Harry), as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill held a special place in his heart for his dear friends Claire Schonfeldt, and Lavern and Bruce Stratford. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Gail, and his parents, Ella and Mossom.

Bill’s happiest moments were spent at Lake Sesekinika, especially at the family cottage, a place filled with laughter, love, and lasting memories. He treasured the extended visits with his grandson Austin during his younger years. Later in life, Bill and Gail found a second home during the winter months at Alamo Palms in Texas, where they formed many enduring friendships.

A devoted and inspiring teacher, Bill left a lasting impression on countless students, earning the admiration and respect of all who had the privilege of learning from him.

Bill had a lifelong love of dogs and welcomed many family pets over the years, but none were more cherished than his loyal companion, Ses, who brought him immense comfort and companionship in his later years.

Deeply committed to his community, Bill was actively involved in many organizations. He was a member of the Lake Sesekinika Cottage Association, served as Secretary-Treasurer for Trinity United Church—where his father, Mossom, had once been an elder. He contributed time as a director with the local Crime Stoppers. He also dedicated many years to the Kirkland Lake Curling Club as both an executive member and president. Bill supported his wife Gail in her work with the Little Assistance Program, by maintaining her accounting. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Matheson Golf Course, where he spent nearly two decades enjoying the game with close friends Chestie, Wayne, and Terry. Among his most treasured moments were the rounds of golf shared with his grandson, Jamoss.

Bill had a remarkable gift for connecting with people and was immediately loved by everyone he met. In his later years, as he required more care, he was surrounded by kindness from those who came into his life—from personal support workers and his dog walker to his food delivery driver and emergency responders. So trusted and adored, they knew where to find his hidden house key and often checked in on him, a testament to the deep affection he inspired. During his hospitalization, he was rarely alone, passing the time with frequent visitors and lively games of crib with his roommates. Even in his final days, the outpouring of care was evident, as many staff members came to say hello—and goodbye.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kirkland and District Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Bill, and for ensuring his comfort in his final days. Special gratitude is also extended to the palliative care team for their kindness and support.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held in the summer.

So sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. Easily one of my favorite teachers ever. One of the reasons I look back on my King George Public School Days fondly, when I was also fortunate enough to call his daughter Tracy my classmate. Such a nice, understanding man. You have my condolences, Tracy, and Bill’s whole family as well, during this most difficult of times.

Where do I start with the Friendship, the curling days at BONSPIELS and Playdowns, OH those were the days. Our club curling and closing spiels. We never did get a golf game together, Rick did with the 3 of you up in Matheson, but seen you out lots with Jamoss. The last couple months was a weekly visit on Thurs. up to the 4th Rm 428...to have our chat, last week Dave Bolger was a nice addition. You never got over to TPR, but I know you are at Peace now. Thanks for the Friendship. Condolences to Robbie (Althena), Tracey(Todd) and all the Family and Friends who knew and loved him. RIP WILLY.

I am sending my sincere condolences onto Mr McKelveys family. He was one of the best teachers while in grade 7&8 at King George. His kindness as a teacher and more importantly a adult in our lives, was always demonstrated as we often left him with giggles as well. You seen him smile from ear to ear and his shoulders shaking as he enjoyed his students stories, antics and at times their badness. He was a beautiful human being. While working at TPR, his continued support shown to his wife and respect towards the staff just solidified how wonderful of a man he was. Rest in peace Mr McKelvey! Some teachers leave that little sparkle with their students!

Our entire family, is so sorry and saddened by the passing of your father and our dear friend Bill. Both your father Bill and mother Gail have had such a wonderful and positive influence on myself, my wife Sheila and our 3 sons. Although we lived 51 weeks a year in the States, the summer week we visited Lake Sesekinika each year positively influenced all our family with the kindness and friendliness your parents as well as Terry and Claire Schonfeldt shared with us. All of us came to think of you, your parents and the Schonfeldt’s as our extended family from Canada. Please take some comfort from how much positive influence your parents bestowed upon our whole family and endless memories of their kindness, and love ❤️

Heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. McKelvey. As one of his former students from CPS, and the youngest of three siblings he taught, I grew up hearing how special his class was, and he lived up to every bit of it. He made learning fun, from his enthusiastic lessons to the “point system” that led to the coveted curling afternoon. He will be deeply missed but leaves behind a lasting legacy in the many students he inspired.

Dear Rob, Tracey and family. So sad to hear of this news, the world has lost one of the great ones! Smart, caring, kind, thoughtful… just a few of the thoughts that immediately come to mind when I think of Bill. A teacher, a mentor, a friend that always seemed to have time for everyone. I was in my 40’s on a Ses summer day and we were having a cold refreshment and he said, “would you please stop calling me Mr. McKelvey.” It makes me chuckle to this day as I didn’t even realize I was doing it. I think it was simply out of respect for the former teacher and wonderful man that he was to many. He will be missed but remembered fondly.

So sorry to hear of Mr. McKelvey's passing. Heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Had him as a teacher at Central Public for a few years and was always engaging and personable and seemed to be genuinely concerned about how you were coming along with your studies. He did make a 'Boys Club' at Central for our class. which if I remember correctly, it was one evening a month in the gym at school where we planned and prepared dinner for ourselves to enjoy and the rest of the evening was activities and sports with fun being the most important ingredient. The final club meeting of the year included the girls from class, and it was a fabulous time for all. Great experience at the Kirkland Lake Curling Club utilizing his personal time on Saturday mornings to teach us all the sport along side Mr. Armstrong as it was always a great and well spent time. Thank you for everything Mr. McKelvey, you will be missed.
