Why Pre-Arrange Your Funeral?
Pre-arranging your funeral gives you peace of mind knowing your wishes are clearly documented and your family will not be left to make every decision during a difficult time. The process is simple, personal and flexible, and you may choose to prepay so that your funds are protected in accordance with Ontario law.
Peace of mind
It allows your loved ones to have some peace, without the stress of making decisions in a time of urgency.
Honoring wishes
It helps ensure that your wishes are honored by allowing you to choose and express your preferences regarding your final arrangements.
A wise investment
It protects you against rising costs and provides flexible payment options to ensure your final wishes are made without financial distress.
Pre-Arrange with Confidence
Planning your funeral or memorial arrangements in advance is one of the most thoughtful things you can do for the people you love. It provides peace of mind today and helps protect your family from difficult decisions at a time of grief.
At Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative, pre-arranging is a comfortable, straightforward process. Our licensed funeral directors will take the time to listen, explain your options clearly and help you create arrangements that reflect your wishes, values, traditions and budget.
Peace of Mind for You and Your Family
Pre-arranging allows you to make informed decisions without the pressure that can accompany an unexpected death. Your wishes are recorded, your important information is organized and your family has a clear plan to follow.
It can also help reduce uncertainty or disagreement among family members. Rather than wondering what you would have wanted, they can focus on supporting one another and honouring the life you lived.
A Simple and Personal Process
You do not need to have everything decided before meeting with us. We will guide you through each step at a pace that feels comfortable.
During your pre-arrangement meeting, we can:
- Discuss the type of funeral, memorial, burial or cremation arrangements you prefer
- Record personal, family and vital-statistics information
- Review available services, merchandise and pricing
- Identify the people you would like involved when the arrangements are carried out
- Discuss payment and funding options
- Provide you with written documentation for your records
Your arrangements can be reviewed over time. As your life, family or preferences change, you may contact us to discuss updating your information or wishes.
You Can Pre-Plan Without Prepaying
Pre-planning and prepaying are related, but they are not the same.
You may simply record your wishes with us without paying in advance. You may also choose to fund some or all of your arrangements ahead of time. Our funeral directors will explain both options so that you can make the choice that is right for you.
There is no pressure to purchase services or make a payment during your first conversation.
Your Prepaid Funds Are Protected
When you enter into a prepaid funeral contract with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment, the funds must be handled according to Ontario law. Depending on the funding method selected, prepaid funds are placed into an approved trust or insurance-based arrangement rather than being treated as ordinary operating funds of the funeral home.
Ontario also maintains consumer protections for qualifying prepaid funeral contracts made with licensed providers. These protections are designed to safeguard consumers in the rare event that prepaid funds are unavailable when they are needed.
We will explain how your particular plan is funded, provide the required documentation and answer any questions before you sign. Your money remains connected to your pre-arrangement and is administered in accordance with Ontario’s funeral-services legislation and regulatory requirements.
What Happens at the Time of Passing?
When the death occurs, the process is straightforward:
- We are notified by the family, hospital, long-term care home or other institution.
- We respond to the place of death and bring the deceased person into our care.
- We retrieve and review the pre-arrangement and prepare the required documents.
- We meet with the estate trustee or designated contact to confirm the information and discuss any requested changes.
- The appropriate documents and authorizations are signed before we proceed.
- After the arrangements are completed, we provide a final accounting.
The person legally authorized to make decisions at the time of death will be asked to confirm the arrangements. This is important because circumstances, prices, family needs and personal information may have changed since the pre-arrangement was originally made.
Protection from Future Cost Increases
Where a prepaid contract provides guaranteed services or supplies, the funeral home assumes the risk that the amount available at the time of death may be less than the cost of providing those guaranteed items.
If the available prepaid amount is insufficient to cover the guaranteed arrangements, the family is not charged the difference for those guaranteed items.
If funds remain after the contract has been fulfilled and the final calculation has been completed, any amount payable will be handled according to the contract and Ontario’s legal requirements. We will provide the estate trustee or designated contact with a clear accounting of the calculation.
Changes or additions requested at the time of death may result in additional costs, but these will always be reviewed and authorized before proceeding.
