Heritage Program
Guided by our values, concrete actions are being taken to reduce global warming and help protect the environment in Quebec and in a country in the Global South. The Heritage Program allows us to:
- plant a tree in memory of each deceased person who used the Cooperative's services;
- offer families and loved ones the opportunity to contribute to the planting of additional trees in memory of their loved one via the obituary;
- hold “carbon-neutral” funerals by planting enough trees to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire vehicle fleet used to provide funeral services for a client;
- promote intercooperation in Quebec by supporting a forestry cooperative in Saguenay;
- promote north-south intercooperation by supporting a forestry cooperative in Guatemala.
In short, funeral cooperatives are taking very concrete action to protect the environment and promote intercooperation.
Planting a tree... to cultivate memories
The commemorative component of the Heritage program aims to plant a tree in memory of each deceased person we have received at the Cooperative. In addition to marking the passing of a loved one, this symbolic gesture has an environmental significance that is meaningful to a growing number of people.
It is also possible for family and friends to honor the memory of their loved one through the obituary by participating in the planting of trees that will help protect life.
Greenhouse gas compensation
Like any economic activity, the Co-operative's operations generate greenhouse gas emissions, whether from the use of vehicles, funerals, board meetings, transportation of the deceased, etc.
Our Co-operative has taken various measures to reduce emissions at the source in order to lessen the impact of its activities on the environment.
To fully offset this impact, we contribute to tree planting to cover 100% of our ecological footprint.
This is a responsible gesture that clearly demonstrates our desire to see life flourish... even beyond death.
2 reforestation projects
The values of intercooperation, international development, and respect for the environment are integral to the Heritage program.
The project will support two reforestation projects. Half of the funds raised will go to a forestry cooperative in Quebec, and the other half will go to a cooperative in Guatemala working in the forestry sector.
In both cases, reforestation work will be carried out on land specifically identified for the Heritage program.
A sustainable collaboration
In collaboration with SOCODEVI, the Quebec Funeral Cooperative Network planted its first trees in June 2009.
Since then, half of the trees have been planted each year by the Ferland-Boileau Forestry Cooperative
in Saguenay and the other half by a forestry cooperative in Guatemala.
The participating cooperatives have committed to protecting and preserving the trees planted for their useful life for the purpose of trapping greenhouse gases (i.e., for a period of 30 to 50 years, depending on the species and location).
