It is with deep sorrow and regret that our brother Lee Whelan lost his valiant battle with pancreatic cancer Monday 6/29 at 2am with his partner of 18 years Manon Lapointe at his side.  He leaves behind his mother Margaret Whelan (nee peters) (Paul Whelan) brother Eric Whelan (Darleen Hoehle), sister Shannon Whelan, sister Corlea Viskovich (Rino), his nephew Zeb Viskovich (of Kirkland lake) and great niece Sunny Viskovich, his nephew Fynnerty and niece Bronti Viskovich.

He also leaves behind Manon’s 3 brothers (Dany, Guylain, and Pascal Lapointe), who he cherished like brothers of his own and Yvette Lapointe who he also affectionately referred to as mom.

Lee was proud to be a gold miner, having worked at Redpath, KL gold, and finishing his last days at Agnico Eagle Gold. He most proudly worked for his father at Paul Whelan mining. A devoted son, loving brother and uncle, and faithful friend.

Lee had a great sense of humor and a gift for storytelling. His laugh reverberated across rooms.  He was a lover of all things Elvis, Sylvester Stallone, and old country music. He always put family first and fierce loyalty was not only a basic standard given but expected in return. To be in his circle meant to be cherished.

You will be missed.

Fly high champ!

Friends and family are invited to call at The Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative on Wednesday July 8th, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.  A graveside service will follow at The Kirkland Lake Cemetery.

- Judy McLeod, on July 1, 2026

To Manon, The Whelan and The Lapointe families, you have my deepest, heartfelt condolences on the loss of Lee, way too soon. I have the fondest memories of him from our high school days, and I remember his mom and Corlea. I remember him being a quiet young man in high school, kind and ready to give a smile in the hallways. I remember being in a school bus trip with Lee and remember him sitting with his Sony Walkman listening to Gino Vannelli on cassette tape :) He LOVED Gino Vannelli back then. One of my best friends in high school had a huge crush on Lee. One day she asked if he would mind if she took a few pictures of him, and Lee kindly and graciously agreed. These photos were take inside KLCVI, and I can see I still have 1 or 2 photos of him in an old photo album somewhere in this house. I remember him so fondly, and wish I had gotten to know him. Blessings to Lee's family and friends, to all who loved him.

My condolences to Lee's Family and Friends. I was in Saskatchewan. I was so home sick. I just wanted to see someone, something, to remind me of home. One day, while walking to school, I heard a voice say...Hey...aren't you from KL? I looked up and there was Lee. Made my time there a little less lonely. Thanks for that Lee.

Manon, and Whalen Family, I am very saddened by the passing of Lee. Working with him first at Holt and then here at Macassa was always fun. He gave as good as he got on the teasing and laughter. Was always a joy to share laughter with him, and he will be missed. Please know I am sending you all strength and hugs

- Nadine Malciw, on July 6, 2026

Manon, Shannon, Eric: It was my privilege to work with Lee at the McGarry Project with Armistice. In particular, we had many discussions about how to treat people we were responsible to supervise with respect - Lee was always met a high bar and was a major contributor to make the operation a good workplace. Lee's passing and now also his mother's is as sad as it gets. The whole Whelan family is among the "good guys". I am full of great memories so this news is particularly sad.
