I will always remember: the nights by the fire with Uncle Jim on the accordion; churning fresh strawberry ice cream; being pulled on the frog board; learning how to water ski; checking out the electrocution of a snake and fish; eating avocado for the first time and his endless interest in our family. He welcomed us into the family fold on every occasion and I will treasure those memories always

Dear Fran and Family, we are saddened to learn if Dr. Rumball’s passing. We have many fond memories of our interactions with Jim both in our work at the hospital and in the community during our years in Kirkland Lake & Kenogami. A favourite memory was when he brought our children into the world as we recall that he was just as excited as we were to be present and to be able to share in our joy. He will be missed. I have known and admired Dr. Rumball since I was a teenager. He was always smartly dressed and well groomed - even at work in the middle of the night. He treated me like a daughter. Often when we had a badly injured patient and he saw I was bothered drawing their blood samples, he would smile and offer to do it for me. I liked him so much for noticing. He was especially kind to my mother when she was dying of cancer. A great loss to Kirkland Lake and his family. He will be sadly missed by many.

Dr. Jim was wonderful to work with (14 years). At his Bloomfield residence, and Kirkland Medical Group yearly Christmas get togethers, you could see how much he enjoyed hosting these parties. His home made eggnog was something we always looked forward to ( it was the very best I have ever tasted). He was a very proud man, always dressed to the nines and always spoke highly about his children. Rest in peace Dr. Jim.

Jackie, Fran and family, I’m so sorry to hear of Dr. Rumball’s passing. I enjoyed working with him and Fran when I was a nurse in the OR. He did c-sections better than many gynaecologists and always put his patients at ease. He was often humming or singing when he walked in the room to operate but one time stands out. He was freshly scrubbed and holding his hands clasped in front of him and came in happily humming until he walked right into the light handle on the overhead light. After a few seconds silence he thankfully made a joke about it and we all laughed. He was a character and was proud to tell stories of his family. I’m glad his suffering is over but sorry for those who are left to mourn him.

I remember Dr. Rumball with great fondness. Under his tough exterior was a funny, caring man who was the only one who could slow dance with me like my dad! Thank you for allowing me in your OR when a very special young man was coming into this world by emergency C-section. It forever changed me! ❤️ Rest in Peace!

Dr. Jim Rumball was my doctor when I needed him most. When he knew my illness needed special attention that he could not provide, he arranged my placement, including an air ambulance trip to Toronto Dr. Rumball knew his limits as a physician in Northern Ontario. He gave his all. That earned him my respect for the special physician that he was. His intervention in my life was not unique. He was decisive and respected and unique. Thank you Dr Jim Rumball for your courage, forthright approach to life and character when it was needed. Dr. William James Rumball was a star in the life of those who had the pleasure of knowing him for the leadership he provided through his lifetime.

I was sorry to hear of Dr Rumbàll's passing he was a great doctor to me so when I hear people mentioning how he was some type of butcher I defended him because he was always good for me. I had my very first surgery at the age of 23 and he was always very compassionate. By reading what his family wrote about him he sounded like he was a very loved man and very friendly with people so I know these people will be missing him. You did your Duty as a doctor a family man and friend now it's time to rest. You will never be forgotten

To Jane, Jacqueline, Patrick and Jim and your mother Betty and your extended families, Our most sincere condolences to your family at this very sad time. Jim was a welcome addition to our Hogan family. He spoke of you all often and he was very proud of you all and your various accomplishments and interests. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. We were happy to be able to share some of Jim’s favourite holiday traditions- his Christmas pudding with the hard sauce comes to mind (almost knocked me off my chair when I first tasted it because it had quite a kick to it!!) Jim fit right in to our music loving family. He always enjoyed our bonfire sing songs and was happy to accompany us with his ukulele. I know that I will miss those moments. To Fran my dear sister, our love is with you unconditionally. We know that you did the best to care for Jim in his final months, weeks and days and moments. Saddened to hear of Dr Jim’s passing. I first met him as a youngster, playing with him in the Kirkland Lake Concert Band. He was the lead “trouble maker” of the percussion section - always ready for a laugh, always with a twinkle in his eye, but also always absolutely spot-on with his playing. A very positive influence, and many happy memories.

Dr Rumball (not Jim)warmly welcomed me at Kirkland and District Hospital in 1976 as a 20 yr old radiology student. I was a little timid as I had heard of his reputation by many. And yes sometimes he was testy . He for some reason took me under his wing and was forever kind even considering my safety returning home after call ins in the middle of the night. He explained to me the significance of abnormal blood work with regards to illnesses and diseases so I could do my work better. I saw many patient experiences too many to mention of him doing his amazing surgical work for people for the coverage area from Rouyn Quebec through to Timmins and Hearst as well as Englehart and NewLiskeard and all the places in between. I saw many whom lives he salvaged from babies, teenage accident victims ,and older adults and no, no one on this earth is perfect . I will forever remember him with great fondness and pride for kindness and skilled workmanship that we were lucky to have in this small community. He was one of those doctors who cared very much about our healthcare and preservation of our services in Kirkland Lake and area. And yes I do know of his passion for his family ,skiing , and famous eggnog cause sometimes we worked around that too! Fran and The Rumball Family We were so sad to receive the news concerning Jim’s death! He was a major contributor to the life of KL in so many ways- certainly in the health field but also as an organizer and participant in his multiple activities! He will missed by so many! To all of Dr. Jim’s love ones Just think it’s almost 63 years of being grateful to him for saving my daughters life after a bout of measles, along with his Dad.He sure made an impression on us and many more patients, but the scar from the surgery can hardly be seen. When seeing you in the hospital did not realize you were getting ready to meet the band in Heaven. Enjoy yourself up there, and may your family know that you’re still swinging.

My dearest sympathy to the family. I was able to know Mr Rumble through my mom a friend of hers. Taught me skiing at Raven Mountain. In 1977 Mr Rumbal and Dr Collin’s saved my life. I had a rare highly infectious strain of bacterial mennengitis which I would be dead long ago. Fast action by Mr Rumbal and Dr Collins saved my life. He was a very amazing man in all ways. I’m very sorry for your loss.

A very amazing man was very good to me. Did amazing things for Kirkland lake.

Although I didn’t know Dr. Rumball personally I am so very sorry to hear of his passing. He is definitely one of Kirkland Lake’s finest to have practiced there for so long- as a child I remember the great names- Dr.Brebner, Dr Bryant, and all those Big names from K L ‘s medical group. He was one of the best and I bow my head to send thanks for his great life.

Jim was a larger than life character and has left such a legacy of memories for so many friends, co-workers and families. He was our 'go to' medical advisor, our fellow ski school instructor and our friend. His family and community will miss him and never forget his contributions to so many aspects of KL life. Whether he was making sure I got the end piece of the roast beef because I liked it well done, to lecturing me about the long term consequences to my kidneys because of wearing a short ski jacket during winter. Or just knowing he rushed back from Toronto so I could use his car in my wedding. He always made me feel welcome everytime I was at his house or cottage. My first memories becoming friends with Jim was in the high school band in the mid 40's when we got together and formed a dance band called the Septones, and then continued on through University, Practices, marriages, more bands and many social events. Heard with sadness the passing of Dr. Jim. Jim and his family were very welcoming and supportive of my wife and. I when we moved to K.L. in 1977. Worked with. Dr. Jim in the OR for 25 + yrs . Please accept my condolences in the recent death of Dr. Rumball that I noticed in the G&M today. A beautiful obituary for a man that indeed lived a full life but whom I did not know. I too am a Kirklander born in 1939 at 89 Woods Street and believe perhaps Dr. Rumball’s father Dr. Rumball delivered me, my older sister and younger brother at that address and in my book of memories still have the $5 receipt signed by him. There were many immigrant Croatians working in the mines up there at the time and heard from many what a good doctor he was. I am going to pass this obituary on to a friend who will then pass it on to Ed Mavrinac whose family and yours were friends. May Dr. Rumball rest in peace as a Choir of Angels now escorts him on the way to Heaven. Peace be with you.

So sorry to read about Jim's passing in the CMAJ. He and Betty welcomed us to Kirkland Lake in 1970 and I have worked with many surgeons in many countries, but none better! The 2 years in KL set me up for my career in anesthesiology. Warm thanks for happy memories.
