POTTER, John David

1921 - 2011

John David Potter died September 27, 2011, at the Temiskaming Hospital. He was born to William and Lillian Potter on October 3, 1921, in Beauchamp Township, Earlton, where he lived until recent years. Educated in Armstrong Township, Earlton, he married Marjorie Field in New Liskeard on September 18, 1947. Mr. Potter began his career as a boy on the homestead farm. In 1942 he set up a dairy operation, which he continued with his loving wife and coworker at his side until 1997. At that time they sold the herd to focus on cash cropping. Mr. Potter was the first farmer in the district to grow Bird’s Foot Trefoil. Canola was a favourite among several other grain, hay and seed crops. He enjoyed running a trap line, beekeeping, gardening and walking in the beauty of God’s creation. As time permitted, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and reader. He loved to sing and play hymns and to speak about his Lord and Saviour. He was a member of the Earlton Gospel Hall. Mr. Potter is survived by his children Joan (Don) Waugh, David (Kim) Potter, Dalton (Joanne) Potter and Cheryl (Mark) Taylor; son-in-law Steve (Lena) Scott; brother Philip (Helen) Potter; sisters Eileen Freeburn and Helen Potter; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, loving wife Marjorie, daughter Marlene Scott and sister Mary Nowry. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. The service was conducted at the Earlton Community Centre on September 30 by Stan Fergusson and Keith Edwards. Pallbearers were Mike Potter, Jason Scott, Ben Taylor, Greg Potter, Derrick Potter and Barry Potter. Greeters were Andrew and Steven Waugh. Burial is at the Earlton Gospel Hall Cemetery. Friends and relatives attending the service came from the Temiskaming district, across Ontario and from Fort Wayne, Indiana. In memory donations to The Gideons and Northdale Manor would be gratefully appreciated by the family.
