Bill went to a show in Kirkland Lake with Granny Acton when he was 4 or 5 years old and during the show they asked for someone to come froward for a contest. Granny encouraged Bill and so he went up to the stage. He had to hang on piggy-back style as a man twisted and turned trying to toss him off. Granny yelled, “Billy, hang on!” and the crowd encouraged him as well. He won the cowboy suit you see in the photo! I am the next sibling in line and I remember that fancy suit and hat! Bill always had a humorous turn-of-phrase or a funny story to tell. I’ll miss him terribly but in his honour will try to see the lighter side in a situation, just as he did. Here’s to you, Bill. Living in BC, we didn’t get to see Uncle Bill too often, but each time is memorable. My most favourite time was when we were staying there and Bill was teaching us how to water-ski. Turns out I’m a slow learner and it took me all day – I mean all day! Bill didn’t give up on me even if I wanted to – talk about patience and lessons learned about not giving up. It was almost evening and I finally got up – after that I got up on first try each time. I tell that story each time water-skiing comes up and how wonderful it was to have someone who believed you could do it. Aunt Chris, Austin & Aaron, my deepest sympathies during this sad time. Bill and Chris’ first visit to our farm in Peterborough happened to be during the wild turkey season. When Norm & I rose from bed on Sat. morning , they were just coming up the lane in their camo with guns in hand (unfortunately no turkeys). They had been out for a couple hours – and I thought farmers got up early! We enjoyed Bill’s extensive knowledge of hunting & fishing. I met Bill at Veterans Affairs Canada.. what a smile and joy of life and common sense. I am too late to go to the service but I so wanted to be there.. I considered Bill a wonderful addition to those who have passed through my life.. and left their mark. We had aviation in common as my Dad was a pilot also.. and we shared stories.. Bill always had a story or a joke to tell… there were times I would pass by Bill’s desk and he would be staring out the window, probably wishing he was out there.. . Bill, in spirit, I am here to send you off.. to the clouds.. — Pat McLean

I will always remember the day I went flying with Bill to his hunting camp. He made that day very special for me. I am blessed to have known Bill and am comforted knowing that he is with his sister (my wife who passed 5 weeks before Bill). Fly freely my friend and brother in law.

What a season of changes……….we’ve sold our home across the bay from you, and we won’t ever be seeing Bill and his plane stuck in the slush again. Sad times. Our thoughts are with you…….we wish you peace and comfort in your memories.

Sorry very sorry and sad to hear of the passing of Bill..Our deepest condolences..I had the pleasure of working, with Bill at Veteran’s Affairs for a few years…Very kind, loved to fly..knowledgeable on so many topics..witty…always a funny story to tell..very kind and understanding on the phone with the Veterans…I recall one time at work, it was a tad cool in the section we worked in..he sent up a request for heat and signed it Chilly Willy…You have been and will be very missed…It was my pleasure to have met and to have worked with you….rest in peace..Ken and Deb Kelly

Dearest Christine and family…. what can I even begin to say. I grew up knowing Bill.. as a Dad, he even let me watch over his boys as their babysitter… that’s trust. He spoke at my wedding…. Chris was there when we got word about my Dad… Bill and you Chris are forever tied to my heart. He is now with my Dad… and i am certain already on a fishing trip to some unknown, unfished lake and having the time of their lives. I am so fortunate to have been able to know Bill. Even though my head knows he is no longer suffering on this earth…. my heart is heavy because of the loss this brings to my world, and mostly to his family’s world. I’ll will always remember cousin Bill for the years of skiing together through all our school years,the wonderful hunting trips at his Dad’s camp on Long Point Lake, and fishing all the lakes around K.L. during our youth. He lived a life that many of us aspired,with a partner that truly enjoyed and shared in his many outdoor interests. Those memories will always be cherished.

MY PLEASURE TO HAVE MET BILL YEARS AGO THROUGH OUR SONS AND A FRIENDSHIP GROW TO INCLUDE FISHING & HUNTING TRIPS AND BECOMING BROTHERS IN DORIC LODGE.ALSO AN HONOUR BILL ASKED ME TO BE DISTRICT SECRETARY DURING HIS TERM AS DDGM.BILL, ALWAYS VERY KNOWLEDGABLE IN EVERY CONVERSATION SEEMED TO BE ABLE TO CAP IT OFF WITH A JOKE.I WILL FOREVER MISS THOSE JOKES, OUR TIME ON THE WATER ,IN THE AIR,ON THE GROUND AND IN LODGE.RIP MY BROTHER, MY FRIEND.
