Kirkland Lake has lost a truly kind and visionary man with the death of Lanny. We both feel sad because Doug worked with Lanny for decades both at NOIT and Northern College and our families have a long history dating back to the Caswell Motors days. Lanny was always willing to take a chance on something new and exciting at the college and stood behind his staff even when things went wrong. They always knew they could count on his support. He must have been so proud of his family and how they stood by him through his dreadful illnesses. Our sympathy to you all. We will miss him.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Lanny Jones family. I worked with Lanny for many years at the Kirkland Lake Campus of Northern College. Lanny was a College pioneer as he began his academic career with the Northern Ontario Institute of Technology (NOIT) which eventually morphed into the present day Kirkland Lake Campus of Northern College. He loved to converse on many subjects and had a superb knowledge in a multitude of academic and practical areas. And what a sharp memory he had. I remember at one Staff meeting at the Kirkland Lake Campus in the Lecture Theatre which seats hundreds, he correctly named, by memory, every Staff member in the Room by first and last name beginning from those seated at the lower levels of the room and working all the way up to the upper seats. He received a round of applause afterwards for his feat. Simply amazing considering at the time there were many, many full time and part time Professors and many, many full and part time Support Staff. He knew and respected all Staff and students at the Kirkland Lake Campus and his door, literally, was always open for a conversation. His wit and intellect will be missed. Stephen Boaro

To the family and friends of Lanny: It is with heartfelt sorrow that I express my sincere condolences to you. I first met Lanny as a student while he was Dean, then later reconnecting our friendship as a college professor. Whether during those times or in between and after, Lanny always greeted people as an equal and with a smile on his face. He made us believe that we had an important purpose in life and that we were doing a great job. Yes, he was a humble, caring person that always had time for people, and put people first. He Loved everyone. May his Love and kind memories, by the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, ease the pain of your sorrow and fill you with Love, comfort and peace. For Lanny, Eternal Rest grant unto you and may God’s Eternal Light shine upon you. God bless.

During the mid sixties I had the privilege of being in several of his classes at NOIT and later at Northern College. His calm demeanor and pride in the accomplishments of his students was legendary. As head of the Mechanical department, at the time, his concern for relevant curriculum was an inspiration to all of us. He was a great teacher administrator and human being. He will be missed by many.

Dear Kim, Glen, David, Stacey, Michael and families: We are so sad to hear of your dad’s passing. Both he (and your mom) were such wonderful people. Your dad was such a kind, gentle man who always seemed to find the positive in things. Such an intelligent man who seemed to be knowledgeable on just about any topic. We very much enjoyed conversations with your dad ….. they were always interesting and made us think! His passing is a loss for your family and a very sad time but perhaps there is some solace in knowing the he is now together with your mom. Please accept our prayers and condolences, Valerie, Peter, Rebecca, Noah and Audrey Corbin

Mike, Kim and Jones family, please accept our sympathies. We will truly miss Lanny strolling down on our cottage road with his walking stick he hand-carved himself. We will miss his leadership on our road board and our daily summer chats when he stopped to talk to us and everyone he met along the way. We will miss that articulate, intelligent and kind wonderful person. RIP Lanny.

Although a fine teacher and a good administrator, Lanny’s first love, it seems to me, was as an Engineer. I remember Lanny every year graphing and colour-coding KL student applications, confirmations and enrollment illustrating year-to-year comparisons. Lanny would post these on his office walls and bring them to meetings. I also remember the parties he would host at the Staff House and his home-made wine. Lanny possessed an incredible way of making you feel special. He always took the time to speak to you, despite the pressures of his day. We will miss him.

To the Jones and extended family, i’m very sorry for your loss. Lanny was indeed a good man. My deepest condolences. Robert And Cook family
Robert Cook, le 1 mars 2021
Kirkland Lake and Northern College have both lost a great supporter. Lanny’s love of KL was only surpassed by his love and loyalty to Northern College. An amazing memory of past events in KL and staff and students at the College. Lanny not only knew about the Hoggarth/O’Connor family, but also about each of our in-laws and their kids and grandkids! And when you would comment “How did you manage to remember that!” He would give a slight smile and say “Well you know……” and off he would go with another story! They say people build a community, how true. Reviewing the other condolences, one quickly begins to realize how valuable Lanny and Joyce were to our town. Condolences from all of our families. It’s not easy to lose a parent.

My heart goes out to the family. I am so sorry for your loss. No pain hurts worse than the pain of losing someone that you love. Lanny was loved and he will be dearly missed. Again, I am so sorry. Though the pain you’re feeling must seem unbearable, please remember that you are not alone. Psalms 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a help that is readily found in times of distress.” Pray to Him for strength. Weep to Him when there are no words. One of the poets of the Bible said at Psalms 56:8, “You keep track of my wandering. Do collect my tears in your skin bottle.” You see, God understands your pain and He cares for you very much (1 Peter 5:7). And He will really help you get through this difficult time (Isaiah 41:10).

We regret not being able to express our condolences to the family in person as we are presently in Texas. As a former student and teacher at Northern, I have known Lanny since 1972. He was a great teacher and a wonderful human being. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.

Kim, Glen, Travis, Taylor – Our hearts are heavy. We know this has been a very difficult few months. Michael, David, Stacey and rest of the Jones family – we’re thinking of you as well and wishing you comfort and peace. Lanny was a wonderful man – full of wisdom, kindness and patience. It was always a pleasure to see Lanny (and Joyce) at the Costello household. We enjoyed chatting about many things, marveled at his word-working skills and enjoyed seeing each new piece over the years. I (Lori) am pleased I had the opportunity to see/speak with Lanny in the Fall of 2015. He took the time to explain the status of his illness, treatments and prognosis. I was both impressed and comforted by his positive but pragmatic view of it all. We’re sorry we can’t be there with you for the services, but we’ll be here with hugs when we see you next. With Love, Lori, Tracy, Craig & Kyle

My Condolences to Kim, Dave, Mike and all of the Jones family. The Hoffman / Jones family have a very long deep rooted history of being much closer than simply family friends. I have many memories as a child of Christmas brunches with the Jones’, New Years eve party’s, the making of home made Ravioli and pasta on a Saturday night in our basement or simply weekend or evening get-togethers with the family at our homes or cottages. Lanny, Joe and Blueberry wine were instrumental in the solving of many global economic and political issues. I will always remember Lanny as having a great mind and the wisdom to share his thoughts and ideas not necessarily when solicited but when the time was right. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him but thanked for the very fond memories he left us during his sojourn on earth. ….Thanks Lanny!
