A Good Man Died Today
It is with sadness, the family announces Kevin’s unexpected passing from a massive heart attack on Tuesday, January 23, 2023, at Health Sciences North, Ramsey Lake Critical Health Unit, Sudbury, Ontario. Kevin is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Merle Kathleen (Stoodley) and his brother Donald Gavin and sister-in-law, Jean Gavin. He is also survived by his daughter Glenda Black (Rick), Jody Gavin (Lori), Kerry Gavin (Alma), grandchildren, Tanner Black (Robyn), Patrick Black (Whitney), Brittany Black (Levi), Kay-Lynn DiRago (Sean), Adam Gavin (Taylor), McCoy Gavin, and great grandchildren Lily Black, Avery Gavin, Hunter Black, Logan, Lane, and Jacob. Kevin is predeceased by his parents Patrick Gavin and Mable (Smith) Gavin.
Kevin’s passion was driving a transport truck, getting to see Canada, coast to coast and the United States in a front row seat with a window view. In his early days as a trucker, the trucks did not have today’s luxury and comforts. The trucks had no air conditioning (he always had the trucker tanned left arm from leaning on the open window), air-ride seats (hard on the back), noisy as tin can, which is why old-time truckers are wearing hearing aids today. Starting at 18
years old, Kevin worked for Walter Little’s Transport until they closed 30 years later. He then shifted gears to drive for Heath and Sherwood, McIntyre Mines, and his son Jody’s company, Odie’s Contracting – always waiting for the call to go driving and a new adventure. He drove trucks until his final days.
Above all, Kevin was a family man. He enjoyed trips to town with his furry co-pilot little Annie. He loved spending time with family and friends whether it was at the house, the cottage, or on the phone, especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will follow this summer.
I am so sorry to hear of Kevin's passing. He always had a great smile and was positive about life. He sure loved his trucking and expressed his passion for this always. I'm very sure he will be sorely missed. May your memories wrap you with his love.

When I started working at Dominion Freightways, Kevin was already a seasoned driver. I soon learned whenever there was a tough spot to park a trailer the boss would say “get Kevin” and he loved the challenge! Kevin was always a nice guy, easygoing, and always ready to lend a hand! He will surely be missed.
