IN MEMORY OF JAMES DOUGLAS BASIL HUDSONMARCH 13, 1920 – AUGUST 24TH, 2012It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Doug Hudson on the morning of August 24th, 2012 at the Teck Pioneer Residence.Born in 1920 to Jim and Agnes Hudson in Parry Sound Doug spent all of his youth on the family farm in the Wanipatae area. It was here he learned to fish and hunt and developed his love of the outdoors that he carried with him his whole life. He was an avid hunter and a great shot and always got his moose.Doug joined the war effort in 1941and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers and proudly served his country until the end of the war. It was in England he met his wife to be Valerie Newman. They were married in Faversham England and subsequently returned to the Sudbury area after the war ended.In 1947 Doug and Val moved farther north and ended up settling in Dobie Ontario to have and raise their family. Doug worked for many years at the Upper Canada Mine as an underground miner and there wasn’t any job he couldn’t do. He was a very active community member in Dobie and took on such roles as Fire Chief and snow plow operator. Curling was a passion of his and he curled for many years at the Upper Canada Curling Club in Dobie. After the closure of the mine Doug was transferred to the Macassa Mine where he worked until 1982.Over the years Doug was very active with the Legion visiting veterans at the hospital for many years. He was a member of the Macassa Mine Rescue Team for many years and helped the team to a district championship in 1971. His love of hockey lead him to become a trainer for the Legion 87’s Juvenile Team for several years. He always loved to garden and could make anything grow and was always willing to pass his knowledge on. He left a large flower garden in Dobie which he was always very proud of.Doug was a very proud veteran and loved to tell stories about his time overseas. He always loved to talk to people and for anyone that was interested or would listen always had a mining or hunting tale.Doug was predeceased by his parents James and Agnes Hudson and his siblings Eunice,Violet, Doris, Rita, Malcolm and Beverley.Doug will be dearly missed by his wife Valerie, son Robert (Linda) Hudson, grand children Scott Hudson, Sara Hudson: son Colin (Geraldine) Hudson; daughter Sharon Hudson (Michael Lelievre), grandson Nicholas Lelievre. Doug is also survived by brother Mitchell Hudson and sister Mae Collart.A Legion service will be held in the Chapel at the Teck Pioneer Residence on Thursday, August 30, 2012 10:30 a.m. The service will be immediately followed by a funeral service.Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Teck Pioneer Residence , 145 Government Road E, Kirkland Lake , Ontario.Offer Condolence for the family of James Hudson
