Irene Zeta Kallio,

IRENE ZETA KALLIO,

2021

The death occurred on Friday, February 11, 2011, of Irene (Simbirski) Kallio, late of Kirkland Lake. Irene was born and lived her entire life in Rouyn-Noranda, QC, until three years ago when she moved to Kirkland Lake. She was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Kallio, in 2008, her parents Maria and Steve Simbirski, sisters Anne Szczesny, Mary Chornoby, and Alta Simbirski and brothers Steve, Bill and Pete Simbirski. Irene is survived by her loving sister, Rose Simbirski, of Mississauga, ON, her beloved son, Richard Kallio and his wife, Laurie Bassett, of Kirkland Lake, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition, she will be remembered by her good friends Allen Laporte, Bev and Harry Wasylyk, Marianne and Karl Clowater and Marilyn Brethour. The family is grateful to her nephew Peter Simbirski, of Noranda, for the care and compassion he showed her in her later years in that city. Irene was a very spirited intelligent woman who loved to laugh, dance, and sing. She began her working life in the Tabulating Office at the Horne Smelter in Noranda, followed by a time as the bookkeeper for her brother Pete’s wholesale electronics business. After the birth of her only child, Richard, she devoted her life to the development of his many talents, especially in music. She was proud of his abilities and took every chance to hear him play the piano, at which he still excels. Irene was also an avid reader, gardener and stamp collector and was very active in the Ladies’ Guild of the Noranda-Rouyn United-Anglican Church, spending some time as church secretary. From 1952 until 2005 she, Bill, and later, Richard, spent all their free time at the log cottage they built by hand at Lac Dasserat in Quebec. In keeping with her wishes Irene has been cremated and a memorial service will take place at a later date. Irene spent the last three years of her life as a resident in Extendicare, Kirkland Lake, where she received excellent care from all staff members who were involved with her there. A special thanks to the members of staff who attended to her Monday night and during her final crisis on Friday, especially Carole Klockars and Erika Livingston; your efforts will never be forgotten. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to Extendicare Activity Fund, Extendicare Kirkland Lake, 155 Government Rd. E., Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4Offer Condolence for the family of Irene Zeta Kallio
