Deacon, Fred

DEACON, Fred

1939 - 2016

The Deacon family sadly announces the death of Fred Deacon at the Englehart and District Hospital on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016. Born in Boston Creek, Fred is survived by his beloved wife Annette (Desmarais), his son Mark (Steven) and daughter Michelle Schaffner (Larry). He will also be dearly missed by his four grandchildren: Madison and Carter Schaffner, and Freddy and Will Deacon. Predeceased by his mother Gertrude (van Rooyen), his father Frederick William Sr., and his sister Patricia Joiner, Fred is also survived by his brother Alfred (Donna). Fred dedicated his life to his family and to his community. From his start as councillor in Chamberlain Township in the early 1960s, Fred worked tirelessly on countless community projects, and in a multitude of roles – elected, appointed and volunteer. Never one to crave the spotlight, Fred often worked quietly behind the scenes to ensure the success of whatever initiative he was focused on. His office at the back of “Deacons” was always a hive of activity as a steady stream of friends, colleagues, customers, and politicians came to plan, to discuss, or to simply benefit from Fred’s wisdom, generosity, or advice. It was his family that was Fred’s main focus. From countless hours spent helping Annette build parade floats, watching endless swim meets, to many quiet times at the cottage, Fred cherished the time he spent with his wife, his children, and then his grandchildren. It was at the cottage where Fred also indulged in his passion for his little red truck, his tractors, his mechanical equipment and his endless earth moving projects. A dear friend to many, Fred will be remembered for his dry wit, his sharp mind and his ability to always do the right thing. He was a true gentleman. Funeral to take place at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, (Corner of 6th Avenue and 3rd Street, Englehart), at 11.A.M. on Saturday, September 3rd, 2016, followed immediately by a reception and lunch in the Holy Trinity Parish Hall. Private interment at a later date. Contributions in Fred’s memory can be made to the Englehart 701 Canopy Fund (Town of Englehart, PO Box 399 Englehart ON, P0J1H0), or to the charity of your choice. Condolences, contributions and memorial candles may be left at www.mcdonaldfuneralhome.ca.
