AUBREY OTTIS STEPHEN BEST,

2021

It is with sadness the family announces the passing of “Red” Aubrey Ottis Stephen Best at the age of 89 on Mon. Feb. 2, 2009 at Kirkland Lake Extendicare. Born May 4, 1919 in Grand-Cascapedia (Bonaventure) PQ. Red is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hazel (nee McDermott) (TPR) and daughters Linda (Bill) Edmonton and Valerie in Kirkland Lake, along with grandchildren Kelly (John) Edmonton, Tracy (JP) Vancouver, Andrew (Karran) Toronto and Darcy (Michelle) Mattawa and great grandsons Keion, Drew, Bodhi and great granddaughter Makenna. He will be fondly remembered by sister-in-laws Grace McDermott, Betty Best, Isabel Best and many nieces and nephews Red was predeceased by parents Gladys (Deering) Dufoe and George Best, sisters Florence Campbell, Opal Rowcliff and Priscilla Greaves and brothers Wilson, Warden and Ralph. Red left home at age 11, eventually settling in Kirkland where he has lived until his passing. He worked across Canada in lumber camps and with road building crews, including a stint building the Alaska Highway, and many years driving truck for Kokotows and TNR. Red was an avid supporter of local sports including hockey, softball, broomball and snooker. He also enjoyed the occasional poker game. Many persons wander in and out of our lives and have little impact. Red, however, with his larger than life persona and presence, impacted most people he met. He was a character, and will be missed by all. Thank you to all the staff at Extendicare for your years of care and support. Memorial donations may be made to Extendicare Activity Fund Kirkland Lake, Ont. A celebration of Red’s life will be scheduled at a later date.Offer Condolence for the family of Aubrey Ottis Stephen Best
