After a short stay at the Englehart and District Hospital, Vera Joy died there on August 11, 2011, with her family by her side. She was born in Asphodel, Ontario, on July 28, 1926, to Florence Merrill and Robert Metcalfe. Educated in Norwood, she married Lester Joy in Englehart. Before having children, Mrs. Joy worked at a cream-corn factory before it became a bullet factory for World War II. She worked in an apple orchard in British Columbia and also worked in a hospital laundry in Edmonton. Mrs. Joy enjoyed square dancing in her spare time. Predeceased by her husband Lester and brothers Jack, Harold and Raymond, Mrs. Joy is survived by her children Larry (Linda), Richard (Patti), Kathleen (Stan) Hamilton, Nancy (Allan) Broderick, Percy (Brenda), and Betty; sisters Doris (Bob) Robertson and Ruth Metcalfe; brother Lawrence Metcalfe; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by Steve Wuerch on August 13, 2011, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. Honourary pallbearers were Terry Broderick, Jason Hamilton, Josh Broderick, Steve Hamilton, Rick Broderick and Carl Broderick. Burial is at the Englehart Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Toronto, Kirkland Lake and Peterborough. In memory contributions to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
