The world has lost one of the all-time greatest knitters, crocheters, quilt makers, cooks and bakers of extraordinary designs and delights. Also, the undisputed queen of the New Liskeard Fall Fair when it comes to winning awards too! Peacefully at home surrounded by her daughters, granddaughter & sister after a short battle with cancer well into her 95th year.
Born 5th in line in Chinguacousy Township, Peel Co. (Brampton) in what would become a very large family, she moved north to Savard Township to the family homestead in 1935. She remembered quite well breaking through the ice every morning in winter to draw water and hauling the full pails uphill to the kitchen. As was expected in those days, she also helped raise her younger brothers and sisters.
When she was working at the Charlton Farmers Co-op in 1950, she met the local Weston Bread delivery driver and in October 1950 married William (Brock) Miller. Right after their marriage, they moved to Stratford, Ontario where Rose went to work at the local glue factory.
They eventually moved to Silver Creek outside of Georgetown and by that time had completed their family of 5 girls. Rose continued to bring in income ironing shirts at home for the OPP. Not long after her youngest was born, she took her with her and began housekeeping for some local bachelor gentlemen.
In the summer of 1965, the decision was made to move back north to Chamberlain Township outside of Englehart where they purchased property that had a cottage on it but no house and for the first winter, lived in it while they built a garage and their home. Rose took no small pleasure in stating that she built the better part of both of them!
For the next 7 years she worked at a variety of places while she also raised laying hens at home and selling the eggs. They included tree planting for the MNR, Aidie Creek Gardens for Charlie Warner and then cooking at the Commercial Hotel for Dave MacEachern which would lead to her final job.
In the summer of 1972, she began as a part time cook at the Englehart Hospital on River Rd and in October of that same year, moved to the newly built hospital on 5th St by Hwy 11. She would advance to food supervisor by the time she retired in the summer of 1994. Within the year she and Brock would relocate to New Liskeard due to Brock’s health.
During those years in Englehart, Rose also found time to pursue her love of softball and broomball. To say she was competitive would be an understatement. She hated to lose! Bowling was another sport she loved and played it right up until her knees said enough which was into her early 90’s! She was a member of the Northern Beacon Rebekah Lodge #212 for many years too. She was loved by one and all who knew her and by everything she did.
A passionate vegetable and flower gardener. Two other yearly pastimes she always looked forward to was blueberry picking season and fishing. Anytime she could get a line in the water in Larder Lake with her son-in-law Mike and then ultimately land one, would have her beaming.
She was a fierce protector and advocate of her daughters in all they did in life, right up until her last breath.
She also loved to travel going to Scotland, England, The Netherlands, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, India, Mexico and the Caribbean many times. Many of these places after she retired.
Predeceased by her parents Frank and Mary (Loveless), husband Brock in August 2000, brothers Murray, Lealand, Gerald, Harold & John and sisters Meryl, Grace & Alda. Great grandchildren Alexander Quast, Alisabeth Quast & step-granddaughter Suzanne Smeaton.
Survived by brothers James (Betty desc) Englehart On, Aubrey (Betty) Englehart On and sisters Dorothy Collier (Jim desc) Georgetown On and Betty Jacksic (George desc) New Liskeard On.
Daughters Diane Welch (David) Hanover On, Sandra Miller, New Liskeard On, Linda Smeaton (Matt desc) Langley BC, Betty McCallan (Wayne desc, David McGuinness) New Liskeard On and Cindy Sheldon (Mike desc) Larder Lake On.
Grandchildren Leigh-Anne Renaud Prabhu (Prakash) Palm Harbor Florida, Tanya Renaud Shortt (Jody) Englehart On, Adam Quast (Andrea) Markham On, Angela Quast Beaudoin (Steven desc) Lively On, Kim Smeaton Brown (Mason) Vancouver BC, Matthew Smeaton Vietnam, Craig McCallan (Tara) Kingston On, Ashley McCallan Barrie On, Riley Sheldon Larder Lake On & Michael Sheldon Larder Lake On.
Great grandchildren Chaetan, Chandini & Chanasaya Prabhu (Palm Harbor), Hunter Shortt (Englehart), Violet Rose Quast (Markham) Ayden Beaudoin (Lively), Noel, Pip & Theo McCallan (Kingston) Ethan & Story Rose Sheldon (Larder Lake).
Also by 5 step-grandchildren. Nathan Welch, Tracey Smeaton McDonald, Neil Smeaton, Evan & Ryan McGuinness plus 15 step-great grandchildren and too many nieces and nephews to mention.
