My first trip to Kirkland Lake was for Keith and Sharon Murray’s wedding. I didn’t know anyone except Phil, of course. I stayed with the Mallette family. Before the family dinner, Phil had duly forewarned me about being questioned during dinner by his Dad. I was nervous. I mean, really, Raymond was THE MAN! I kept watching and waiting for the questions. My strategy was to keep quiet, not draw attention to myself and with every mouthful of food I was more and more relieved. The questions did come but Raymond was kind, attentive and interested and really funny, laugh out loud funny. Thank you Raymond for welcoming me into your family from the very first day. I love you! I’ll miss you.

I can remember the summer when Uncle Ray, Aunt Dorothy, Sheri and Brian drove across the country and visited us in Trail, B.C. in the mid 70’s. Even as a younger lad I was blown away at how different Uncle Ray was from his brother/my dad, Greg Mallette. My dad was a very reserved man, while Ray was very, very different. I can recall Uncle Ray sitting in our front yard drinking multiple beers in one sitting, commenting on everything…and throwing in the odd swear word in the audience of us kids…I thought it was great. My dad rarely drinked more than one beer at a sitting, never really swore (I heard him say the “F word” once in my life) and was generally very reserved and in control. I always thought my exuberance/excited nature was from my mother’s Italian heritage, but through Uncle Ray I know it is pure Mallette! I still use one of the swear words I learned from Uncle Ray in the mid 70’s from time to time. My other strong memory of Uncle Ray occurred when I shaved off my mustache at the age of 30, after sporting it for more than a decade. I can remember wiping my face clean, looking into the mirror and saying to myself, “Hey, it looks like Uncle Ray is looking back at me!” I am very sad you are gone, but I will remember you with fondness forever. Greg Mallette Jr.

Carol and I were shocked when we read of Ray’s passing. We both remember him as a stern, but fair principal, a man who spent his career working to ensure his students made something of themselves. His guidance and advice worked for us. He was a terrific guy who touched the lives of thousands of people. Not many men can claim that. Our deepest sympathies to his family and take heart knowing Ray’s legacy will be with us forever. Lee Ballantyne …. Class of ’66 and again in Class of ’67. (Sorry Ray) Carol Scarr Ballantyne …. Class of ’69

We were privileged to begin our teaching careers at KLCVI in 1969. Although we moved ‘south’ in 1973,Ray remained an inspiration to both of us throughout our careers: the faith he placed in young teachers, his commitment to students, his ability to communicate his vision for KLCVI, and his leadership as the collegiate expanded set a standard that we aspired to as administrators. Our deepest condolences.

As a very young person during World War II, Ray was a Navy man, who served his country well on the high seas. A little over two decades later Kirkland Lake C.V.I. became his vessel on which he was Captain and ran a tight ship. Your friendship, leadership, guidance and good deeds will always be remembered, Aye. Aye. Captain! With sorrow…

To the Mallette Family Our thoughts and condolences to the family. Ray will be missed by everyone who knew him. Hou fortunate we were to have worked at KLCVI under his leadership. Ray,s guidance and friendship made the school a wonderful place to be for both staff and students. He allowed us to develop as both educators and individuals. His loss is felt deeply by many. In 1969 Ray hired 33 rookies. I can’t imagine having a better pricipal to work with. He supported and backed up his staff at all times. I suppose his experience in the navy was the source of his administrative approach to his staff; “If the crew’s not happy, the ship doesn’t sail.” He became a good friend and fishing buddy. He will be missed by so many people.

K.L.C.V.I. was a fabulous place to teach with Ray Mallette at the helm. His educational focus and associated humour as a leader, inspired those who worked with him. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all….. Sid and Myrta Hamden

I was just one of the many students to pass through KLCVI when Mr. Mallette was principal and I have nothing but fond memories of him. My condolences to his family.

Ray was my first principal at KLCVI (in 1975 and he remains my favourite of all the principals I’ve experienced over the years). His unique and down-to-earth style as well as his compassion was much appreciated. I am sorry for your loss. Barb Wilson

Matthew 25:34-36 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, âCome, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.â Mr. Ray Mallette was a great host once he welcomed in his home and I will Always be very greatful for that. My feelings to all MALLETTE Family. He was a great man. Heaven holds a place for him.
