Phyllis Swanson-Klingbeil Phyllis Swanson-Klingbeil died peacefully at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury, where she resided, on April 20, 2009, at the age of 101. She was born to Walter and Blanche Devolin on April 2, 1908 in Madac, Ontario, the first of eight children. She moved to Hunta, Ontario, where she received her education in an old log cabin with six other students. She graduated from Grade 8 and began to help out on the family farm while also working at the local general store. She married Henry Swanson in 1927 and moved to the Hearst area, before moving on to Lobush, then Kapuskasing. Mr. Swanson died in 1964 and Mrs. Swanson-Klingbeil continued to live in Kapuskasing while working at the local drugstore for 22 years. She filled her spare time with knitting and crocheting and often spoke of the 22 tablecloths and two bedspreads that she made. She loved to cook and often reminisced how she canned 365 jars of preserves each year during the time that she raised her family. She married Ivan Klingbeil in 1979. Mrs. Swanson-Klingbeil moved to New Liskeard about 1985 to be near her son, Glen, and his family. The Northdale Manor became her home in 1997 until she moved into the Temiskaming Lodge two years ago. Mr. Swanson-Klingbeil was a member of the Anglican Church and of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Pheobe (Ernie) Robertson, Eva (Jack) Penney, Jessie (Lloyd) Abernethy and Nellie (Abe) Wilcox; her brothers James (Sylvia) and Charles Devolin; her beloved husband Henry Swanson; her sons Valde and Clarence Swanson; her son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Solveig Swanson, and her son-in-law Duncan (Marge) Shankland. Also predeceased by her second husband Ivan Klingbeil and her grandsons Gary and Myles Swanson. Mrs. Swanson-Klingbeil is survived by her sister Isabelle (Glen) Shier of Cochrane; her daughter Margery (Duncan) Shankland of Toronto; her daughters-in-laws Joyce (Valde) Swanson and Micheline (Clarence) Swanson. She will be deeply missed by her good friend Duff Checkly and her grandson Wayne Swanson, as well as her other grandchildren: Judy, Debbie, Brian, Bradley, Sonja, Kevin, Mark, Tracy, Eric and Daren. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Her stories, wisdom, loving spirit and optimistic zest for life will be missed by her large extended family as well as her friends. A graveside service will be held in early June at the Kapuskasing Cemetery when burial will take place. The family would like to thank the kind staff at the Temiskaming Lodge, as well as those at the Manor, who gave of themselves to better Mrs. Swanson-Klingbeil's later years. She made many friendships and appreciated all the care she was given. To you, her family is so grateful for your dedication and your kindness.
