It is with the deepest sorrow that the family of Paul Whelan announces his passing. Paul was born November 4, 1939 and died September 27,2021 with his wife by his side.
Paul is predeceased by his parents Michael J Whelan Sr and Hanorah (Finnerty) his brothers Howard (wife Joan), Dave (wife Yvonne), Moe (wife Colleen), Jack (wife Kay) and Michael Jr.
Paul is survived by his wife of 60 years Margaret (nee Peters), children Eric (Darleen), Shannon, Lee (Manon), Corlea (Rino Viskovich) his 3 beautiful grandchildren Zeb, Bronti and Fynnerty Viskovich, his sister Helena (Jim Purdon) and sister in law Sandy (wife of Michael Jr.)
Paul is also survived by his brother in laws Earl (Connie) Peters, George (Marjorie) Peters, Delbert (Vivian) Peters, Fred Peters, Richard (Veronica)Peters, Arnold (Judy)Peters, Gerald Peters. And sister in laws Evelyn (Dennis Landon), Doris, and Christine(Brian
Farmer) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Paul was a mining contractor that worked in many countries such as Greenland, Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Honduras and Canada. He loved working in the mining industry and was well respected by his peers. After decades of working for other contractors (Cemetation, Redpath, CMS, AMS, Lily Resources) he followed his dream and formed his own company Paul Whelan Mining Contractors.
Paul was a humble man who believed in honour and that your word was your bond, a handshake as good as a contract. He had a keen mind and never stopped learning, he had an infectious laugh with a wicked sense of humour and a true gift of storytelling.
He loved his family and was proud of his children and in awe of his grandchildren. He had an especially soft spot for his beloved granddaughter Bronti.
He thought he was blessed to be a Canadian and that Canada was the greatest country on earth but the first time on Irish soil felt like coming home.
He loved politics, arguing about politics, the outdoors, Cadillacs, driving those Cadillacs even on dirt roads, black labrador retrievers and old westerns.
Paul was a throwback to another time and his passing will leave a void in the lives of those he left behind. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The family would like to thank the paramedics, the OPP, and the French Family Funeral Home for their kindness and compassion.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Holy Name Parish would be appreciated.
Visitation will take place at French Family Funeral Home on Monday October 4, 2021 from 10am-12noon followed by a short service at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery.

We are so very sad to hear of Paul’s passing. Our hearts go out to you and the entire family and pray for you all at this time.
I am so sorry to hear of Paul's sudden passing. Paul was a great friend to my dad. He had such a great sense of humour. I would start to smile, almost laugh as he approached me, as I could hardly wait for the dry humour to come out in the conversation we were about to have. He and my dad were like boys going out for their ride and whispering their stories, both nodding and laughing-although they were both so deaf, I'm sure they missed most of it. Then again they sometimes I think they knew what the other was thinking, words just made it interesting, and most certainly comical. God bless you all.
My sympathy on your loss of Paul!
May your memories provide consolation and comfort!
God bless!
Sincerely, Joan Butt

So to hear about Paul great man loved working for him and getting rides in that caddy from red like to kl we stop at every closed mine on way home and he always had interesting stories about them mines . One of the sternest and humorist person I ever work for and I learnt a lot from him R.I.P Paul
It is with deep regret to hear of Paul's passing. One of the last of his kind and a loss to the mining industry. The man always put laughter in my heart whether we met on the street or else where. His smarts and approach to life will live on with me.
Please accept my sympathies on losing Paul, a great mining guy and storyteller. The last time Paul and I had coffee together at Timmies, we laughed and traded mining stories for an hour and with well over 100 combined years working in the mining industry, we could have shared many more. RIP Paul
