Dressed as a leprechaun sitting on the hood of a truck….retirement party at the house with an expensive bottle of brandy & having to help him to bed….driving on the highway in Toronto (really scary)…confusing conversations which make you laugh. Will miss my weekly phone calls, will miss you more “dad”.

I remember, as a child, sitting on the edge of the hole underneath your house – the hole that you dug by hand as you prepared the ground for the basement walls. Ever patient, ever kind, you answered all my childish questions and were never once too busy to talk to me. I remember you out back chopping wood to keep your family warm, shovelling snow, tending to your wonderful vegetable garden – especially the potatoes – and mowing the lawn. When you weren’t looking after your own family you were always doing something for someone else, whether it was delivering Meals-on-Wheels, shovelling our snow, mowing our lawn, or having Rick and “your girls” in for tea and a cookie. I remember the invitations to yours and Rita’s house for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, anniversary gatherings, and Christmases. All were welcome there. When the tables turned and I was able to invite you to dinner I knew I always had to have a BIG bowl of potatoes to satisfy you. No meal was complete without your beloved potatoes. Mashed, baked, or scalloped, but your favourite were just plain boiled – and there had to be lots. Ever since I can remember you were part of our lives, Paddy. No one ever had a better neighbour than you – a neighbour who became a member of our family and we of yours. I simply can’t imagine life without you. May you rest in the peace of heaven with Rita at your side. We will meet again my dear gentle man. Laurie

“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word…” A humble, simple, gentle man has gone on to join his Rita. We will miss you terribly Paddy. Rest in peace, sweet man. With love, Laurie, Rick, Richard and “your girls” Khala and D’artagnan.

My friends John and Kevin , Words cannot express my sadness at the news of your fathers passing . We spent many a day together in our youth and both of your parents were wonderful to be around . Gentle and caring , good to the core . Finer folk I have never met . Reunited with his only love Pat will rest for eternity peacefully knowing he was loved by his family as he loved them . As his faith carried him throughout his life , so it shall carry him to eternal peace with his maker .

To the Hackett family, our sincerest sympathies. I recall the day Paddy retired from Macassa Mine where he worked in the carpenter shop during his final working years. He was cheerful and pleasant to work with, a good man to the core. When I talked to Paddy on the street a few months ago, he talked about his roots in County Longford, Ireland.
