VAN OOYEN (HEASLIP), Patricia Pat Squires

1927 - 2010

Patricia Van Ooyen (née Squires) died peacefully in her sleep in her Englehart apartment on June 22, 2010 in her eighty-fourth year. Mrs. Van Ooyen was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, U.K. on April 18, 1927 to Alfred George Squires and Isabella Cairncross. Loving mother of Rick (wife Carol) of Englehart, and Brenda Spencer (husband John) of North Bay. Sadly missed by grandchildren, Christopher (fiancée Kayla) Heaslip, and Gregory (Julie) Heaslip; Lisa (fiancé Josh) Spencer, and Amy(partner Eric) Spencer; and by one great-grandchild, Alexia Heaslip. She was predeceased by son, Lloyd Douglas Heaslip in 1972; by her first husband, Benjamin Wesley Heaslip in 1998, and by her second husband, Peter Van Ooyen in 2005; sister Doreen Blackwood; brothers, Cyril, Peter, Kenneth and Finlay Squires. Mrs. Van Ooyen is also survived by sisters-in-law, Helen Squires, Irene Squires and Irene Hawley; and many loving nephews, nieces and cousins. Mrs. Van Ooyen was educated in Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from The Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College in 1942. She worked as a private secretary for approximately five years in Scotland during the war where she met her first husband. She became one of Canada`s war brides by travelling to Canada on the S.S. Aquitania in October 1947. By November of that year, she was married and working hard at farming in northern Ontario. She had a long and happy life. During her life she was actively involved in several community organizations, notably, the Heaslip Willing Workers and Ladies Legion Auxiliary. She had worked as store clerk, waitress, motel and apartment co-supervisors over the years, and served as curator of the Englehart Museum for several years. She was a proud and devoted mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a loyal sister and aunt. Funeral arrangements are by the McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Englehart Arena Complex Hall with visitation starting at 1:00 PM. Interment of ashes will take place at the Englehart Cemetery. If desired, contributions to the Englehart Clinic Expansion, the Englehart Well Women`s Clinic or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
