MACDONALD, Norman

1942 - 2024

Norman Robert Macdonald passed away on September 12th 2024

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the sudden loss of devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend, Norman Robert Macdonald.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife Brenda, his father Robert(Bob), his mother and father in-law Joyce and Stanley Chandler, his Fur Baby Mikey the cat. Survived by his mother Dorothy, his children Dean(Vicki), Robert(Angel), Tammy and special mention to Jim Rosko(Paulette) who he thought of as a son, Tanya(Al) who he thought of as a daughter. His sisters Eleanor(Jack), Flora(Alan), Gloria, his brother in-law Roger(Linda), sister in-law Jo-anne(Garry). He also leaves his grandchildren; Hunter(Mackenzie), Daniel, Rebecca and Allison as well as many Nieces and Nephews whom he loved dearly.

Norm had so many special people in his life (often elevated to sibling and child status): Gloria Semple and her late husband Willie who was more like siblings than friends to both he and Brenda in life. Dave Kitty (and his family). Dave was Norm’s partner both in the mining world and in the great outdoors. They shared so many adventures together and were wonderful friends in life. Wayne Williams (who also sadly passed away recently) and his family were so special to Norm and his clan. They chased those elusive moose for over 60 years (and not many got away)…. And so many more close friends throughout the years.

Norm was a true family man, who was made complete by the love of his life Brenda, who after 62 years of marriage, sadly passed way last October.

He was a kind and caring person who was quick to offer a helping hand to those in need.

Norm was a man who had many talents. A gifted self-taught artist, he created many beautiful paintings, carvings and paddles. He could see the beauty in simple things and would often just pick up a twisted piece of driftwood and transform it into a beautiful work or art. He was a true outdoorsman and most at home in the bushlands of Northern Ontario. He truly was THE outdoorsman. Trapper, guide, hunter, and fisherman extraordinaire, Norm was most at peace in the bush. He was an environmentalist before most people knew what the word meant and always treated nature with a kind and caring hand. He loved gardening and grew so many wonderful vegetables and berries, that friends and family were never forgotten when harvest time came around. Norm cared deeply for animals and animals seemed to know and trust him.

Norm was a hard rock miner, who excelled at his trade. In fact, his nickname underground was ”Stormin Norman” (he never clarified how that name came to be) and for over 30 years, he plied his trade in mostly gold mines across Northern Ontario. He loved rocks. Rocks adorned his home, both inside and out.

Family would like to thank the Staff at Blanche River Health Kirkland Lake for the patience and gentle care they took of Norman, with a special mention to Taylor and Brianna who were there with us at the end. We would also like to thank Krista from the French Family Co-operative for all her help with Mom and Dad and the care she took.

Dad/Norm’s final wishes were for us not to grieve his passing, but rather for us to celebrate life. No visitation or memorial will take place however a Celebration of Life will be posted at a future date (to be determined).

Dean, Robert, Tammy and Family

So sorry to hear of Norm’s passing, my mining career began with Norm back in the early seventies and I couldn’t have had a better mentor or partner…Stormin Norman taught me besides mining how to be very conscientious of our underground environment in order to ensure we went home safe and injury free each and every day to our families.Norm was truly a family man...I enjoyed reminiscing our memories whenever we would meet and that was a lot of reminiscing for sure…we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to you all during this difficult time…we will miss you Norm….REST IN PEACE PARTNER

Norm's family

I just learned of Norm's death after a couple failed attempts to invite him out to Kenogami for a meal .Needless to say like everyone else whose lives were richer knowing Norm, I am truly saddened. He and Brenda were especially kind to my parents in so many ways and was truly a full member of all the extended family . The description of him in the obituary was right on. His respect for natives and the environment set a high standard for us all .
I am thankful to have spent time with Norm ,using his handmade lures and admiring our painting and spirit story of Stonebear

So sorry for your loss. Your dad was such a wonderful guy. My entire family thought the world of him, he will surely be missed. We had the pleasure to hunt with him a few times over the years, he always had a trick or two to share with us during the hunt. We always enjoyed his company at my dad’s butcher shop and the many stories he had to tell. Keeping you in our hearts and prayers.
