HAWIRKO, Norman

1945 - 2023

Norm Hawirko, passed away after a brief illness, at the age of 78 at his home in Kenabeek with his cherished wife Marilyn by his side.

Born in Lac la Biche Alberta, he was predeceased by his mother Florence (McNeill) and father Richard Hawirko. Norm leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years Marilyn (Ruddell); his two sisters-in-law Kathy (late John Arab) & Jean (John Chardine); nieces Allison & Andrea and nephews Christopher & Ian.

Norm leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and many wonderful memories. He was multi-talented; a draftsman, cartographer, photographer, historian, graphic designer and loyal friend to many. He had a passion for the outdoors and went with Marilyn on many picnics, camping, canoeing, and fun excursions. Norm’s joy of sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for exploring the old mining camps was infectious. He volunteered at local museums and historical societies, was one of the founding members of Nastawgan Trails, and co-authored several books and guides, including a history of Hudson Township with Marg Arnott Villneff. For many years he worked closely with his long time friend Dr. John Pollock on archeological/historical projects. As a certified communications person with Transport Canada through his work with drones, he was a volunteer most recently with Temiskaming Search and Rescue, which he greatly enjoyed.

Fiercely loving and fiercely loved, he will be forever missed.

Cremation taken place with the Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Mountain Chutes in the spring of 2024.

If desired, donations can be made to the Temiskaming Hospital.

Marilyn and family

My condolences and remembrances of Norm who was ahead of his time on the power of the internet and started many of us on website design and computer graphics. His work in cartography was exceptional. He'll be missed in Temiskaming.
