Dear Gertrude and Family, We were extremely surprised and saddened today when Gertrude called informing us of Karl’s passing. It is hard to think that such a kind, energetic person, full of life, has passed. Remembering (when we lived in Kirkland Lake) the many good times we had with you, fishing, skating on the pond behind your house, and skiing at Kanasuta. We enjoyed visiting the cottage at Raven Lake when we came back on holidays, as well as, the times you came out here to B.C. skiing at Whistler. My sympathy to the Hochfellner family on the loss of a pillar to the community. Mr. H was a man of few words, none of them complaints or negative but rather words of wisdom. Many frosty mornings I was picked up in the brown Buick Regal and taken to Raven mountain for a day of great skiing with Mr ands Mrs . H and Johnny. These are memories that will never fade.

We just recently learned of Karls passing, We offer our deepest sympathy to Karls Family. Our greatest memories of Karl are from Raven Mt & Kanasuta. He would always tell our group ( Shawn Theriault, Kyle Sayer, Mike Goodman and myself) you guys should slow down on the hill and the next thing he would go blowing by us singing and whistling and laughing. He was also a great skiing mentor to our daughter who loved him dearly, he spent many hours with her going up the tow at Kanasuta and helped her to become a very accomplished skier. Our condolences to Gertie and family. We will miss his bantering as we arrived at the hill “too late” and in his words”What’s the matter with you guys? Can’t you get out of bed!” He would chuckle and move on. He made deals with the kids to motivate them to ski “the big Hills”. I’ll give you a chocolate bar if you’ll ski the Grande Prix with me. It always worked. He was always so patient with the children and they really enjoyed his company. My father, Harry Kirchmayer, fellow Austrian skied with Karl for many years. When Dad gave up skiing he watched hockey games with Karl at the rink. They were good friend and he will be missed. Rest in Peace Karl we have lost a great ski buddy!.

Very sorry to hear about Karl’s passing. We’ll remember many great ski days at Raven and Kanasuta, and a warm home in winter with Karl’s expertly installed furnaces.

Since Karl accident at Mountain our toughts are for him and the whole family. What â great man and skier hé was , coming from Europe he was a legend for us. We met him first at Raven in seventies. His passion for skiing was never shake , but also his love for people smiling talking give great encouraging words to kids He was à model for all of us, and on the hill we will always had a toughts for Karl. I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Karl. I only met him a few times when I lived with Carl at University but he was a very nice friendly person who always sent along great fish like pickerel and rainbow trout to keep us fed. I know from Carl’s stories over the years that he lived a full life and was still working hard right up until his passing. My thoughts are with the whole family at this time. Warren Hill

It is with great sadness on hearing that Mr. Hochfellners passing. He was a good mentor and friend. As a young boy he helped me to ski slops and as a young man he mentored me on work ethics that I carry today. I can still picture Karl on the top of Raven mountain with a smile from ear to ear and the endless blue sky behind him ready to carve up the freshly packed snow. He will be greatly missed and I was blessed to have know him.

An amazing man! I recall many days of skiing with Karl and John growing up on Raven Mountain. He instilled in me a greart passion for a sport I continue to love. Watching him conquer any slope with grace and excellence was a try inspiration and one I often reflect upon today.A Great family man who we will miss greatly.

I will cherish our conversations as you paddled by in your canoe each day at the cottage, how you always reminded me I’d better hurry down the lake and pick the blueberries before you got them all. Our family camping trips before at Raven that made us all fall in love with the lake which ended up in our families all purchasing a lot which led to many many years of enjoyment at the cottage. How I loved sitting with Brian and watching you make a piece of drift wood come to life with your unique face carvings. Karl and I first met in 1983 at the Macassa Number 3 Shaft during the early sinking. The shaft crew had used a scaling bar to poke a big ugly hole in the siding at the bucket dump in our new headframe for fresh air and a view of outside. When I asked Karl for advice, he just smiled that big trademark ear-to-ear grin and said he would look after it. If you look fifty feet up the headframe, that window he installed is still there to this day. RIP in heaven old buddy.

Mr. Hochfellner is the reason I am still in love with skiing. When I was three years old learning the ropes at Kanasuta, Karl took me under his expert wing and taught me how to ski well, and more importantly, how to have fun doing it. One of the most generous and patient people I’ve ever met, Mr. Hochfellner instilled in me a lifelong passion for skiing (and hot-chocolate breaks). I will never forget his kindness in teaching me how to ski and, ultimately, how to push myself just a little further whenever I was in doubt. Now, whenever I’m waiting in line for first tracks, I will think of his relentless passion for skiing and do my best to make him proud. I grew up skiing at the Seastika ski club which my father and many dads including Carl created and kept running. It was a great time 1950s and 60’s. Thanks Carl. May this next phase be the best for you! May your family be at peace and revelling in what you brought to their lives!

My condoleances to all the family members. Mr Karl was a good friend of my father Claude Lacroix. He knew us for over 40 years. We First met him at Raven Mountain and then at Kanasuta’s. He was always happy to ski with us or discuss with me and my brother Stephane. Last saturday I asked him if” life was treating him good” and he told me:oh yes! I’m still skiing at 80 years old.He was a great skier, strong and fast as lightning!! We will miss him at Kanasuta. Good bless Mr. Karl!!

I am sitting here in Breckenridge Colorado largely because of Karl. He taught me the finer points of skiing having never had a formal lesson but for Karl telling me what to do. He then took my two boys under his watchful eye both at Raven Mountain and Kanasuta and virtually taught them how it should be done but in his very subtle and fun way. One of my fondest memories in my time on earth is when Brian, George, Karl and I went on a ski trip to Kicking Horse BC. One morning the sun was coming up, we were first on the mountain and I believe I remember Karl helping the lifties removing frost from the seats of the chairlift in preparation for first run. Vivid in my recollection is Karl at the top of the world with a twinkle in his eye, first run, fresh snow, large grin and a GOODY GOODY and off flying down the bowl, always graceful, elegant and free on his boards. What a challenge it was to follow Karl down the hill – could not keep up! He will be missed.

On March 17th ironically my birthday I say goodbye to a beautiful man. Icon of the hill aka The Yellow Bullet ! Karl skied with my three sons and most recent with my grandson. Many fond memories, with one that still brings a smile. One of my sons, a teenager at the time looked at me like I had three heads……Some guy called here and wanted me to tell you the ski hill was open. That was Karl, often greeted with a hug, followed by ” you guys are eating again !” Going back many years before children, nothing nicer then to click off those skis at the top of the hill to catch a few rays. Well apparently not the thing to do ! You would get the look followed by “what is this ? Do another run !” Forever in our hearts Colleen, Cliff, Matthew, Jacob, Gino, & Carter

Our sympathies to Gertrude & family. Karl, such a gentle soul with his artistic talents presented a carving of a smiling face in a piece of wooden windfall, that has hung by our fireplace since the early seventies. Never to be forgotten.

Karl was one of the best skiers in Northern Ontario and an inspiring ski team coach. I had the good fortune of skiing with him two years ago at Kanasuta some 50 years later and he was still skiing his parallel style perfectly and at full speed. My condolences to the Hochfellner Family

My condolences to Karl’s friends and family. I will always have great memories of Karl… When I was younger, he would take me between his legs to climb the mountain with the T-bar at Raven’s. He would take me on the “exterminator” and I tried to follow him, but He was always too fast for me!! That made him smile everytime. Judy and I were so shocked to learn of Karl’s situation last week and so saddened to learn of Karl’s death. On behalf of Judy and I and the Raven Lake Cottagers’ Association, our deepest sympathies and prayers are extended to Gertrude and family at this time. Judy and I feel so fortunate to have been included in Karls circle of friends he was such a kind, humble and welcoming person. I will cherish the memories of the great chats we had at the Cottage BBQ, competing with him for blueberries at Larder Falls and the winter phone calls when he would provide me with winter updates on the area roads and weather. Karl was always a great supporter of the Cottagers Association and me personally I could always count on his counsel and advice he was so warm and always treated people with respect and dignity. It will not be the same at Raven Lake without his presence and his boat slip at the landing will provide lasting memories for me and many of his neighbours at the lake. At least we can gain some comfort in knowing that he was able to enjoy the slopes and the outdoors to the end. Hal & Judy Humphries Gravenhurst

Our hearts are broken. Karl was an amazing man. There are no words, only our deepest sympathy to all who love him.

I first met carl in 2005 as I had gone to him to build me some ducting,he came to the house and did all measuring for the project.Before i had chance to pick up duct I was in a bad accident where I ended up on crutches and off work for a couple of months.when i made it back in to pay him (on crutches )he absolutely refused to accept my money until I was 100% fit to return to work and provide for my family,He said I may need that money.I instantly gained all the respect in the world for this man and considered him a good friend from that point on.Men of this calibre are few and far between,I will miss him, My deepest condolences to his family.

Karl was a wonderful man, who loved life. Our sons always remember him being so kind and helpful to them in their early days of skiing. Remember and treasure all the great memories you had with him. Our condolences.

Like all of us skiers at kanasuta Carl became a “member” of a family the day he joined the “gang”. We shered the same trill of sliding down the hill in companionship and respect. Lesia & John would like to send their condolences to Gertrude & her family. Karl loved to ski & his last day was doing exactly what he loved to do. He will be missed especially by his grandchildren. Memories of skiing and fishing at raven lake. We had a family Christmas in Gravenhurst & Newmarket by all family members this past year. He worked at his shop still in his 80th year and enjoyed chats with his friends Kirkland lake will miss him.

We are very saddened to hear of Karl’s passing. We are very sorry for your loss and extend our condolences to all of his much loved family. He really improved my own skiing whilst following behind him on many runs over the years and his kindness and generosity that he extended to our children Marisa and Jed, will never be forgotten. If they wanted to stay and ski when mom had had enough, Karl would allow them to stay with him and then carried in a sleeping child on many occasions.
