Juergen Ernst Leukert passed away peacefully March 3, 2021 at the age of 81 leaving behind a lifetime of wonderful memories. Juergen was born to Edith and Heinz Leukert in Berlin, Germany on August 12, 1939 just before World War Two; an event that would impact his life decisions thereafter. He had two younger brothers, Wolfgang (deceased 1941) and Heinz with whom he always remained close. After enduring the hardships of war, Juergen decided to become a baker as he said, “his family would never go hungry again.”
On May 27, 1957 he immigrated to Schumacher with his mother and Heinz to join his dad who was already working in Canada. He didn’t let the fact that he couldn’t speak or understand English stand in his way and he began to work for International Bakery in Timmins. His English quickly improved in 1961, when he met the love of his life, Carole Scott, who he married in 1965. Juergen became a Canadian citizen in 1962. He embraced being Canadian but continued to celebrate and share his German heritage and recipes of course. Juergen and Carole opened Leukert’s Bakery in Kirkland Lake in 1966 followed by their second business, Camo Linens and Gifts, in 1972.
As a child during the war, Juergen was often sent to safety on a friend’s farm in the country. Juergen loved his time on the farm, which led to the desire to raise his own children in the country. In 1974, Juergen and Carole bought their first farm in Armstrong Township to fulfill this goal. With his childhood memories as his only farm experience, he had a lot to learn. After more than a year of running both businesses, Leukert’s Bakery was closed in 1975 and the farm became the focus. A new house was built and two more parcels of land were purchased to support 200 head of cattle.
During these hard working years, Juergen always gave back to the country that took him in and gave him a better life. He was an active Lions Club member in Kirkland Lake and Kerns for a combined 25 years. He was involved in starting the Kirkland Lake Soccer League where he sponsored and coached the Leukert’s Bakery Barons. Finally, not having received any education in Canada, he was very proud of his election to the Timiskaming Board of Education (DSBONE) as a trustee for 25 years; 19 as chairperson. He always made decisions that were in the best interest of the students.
In 2004, the farm was sold and a retirement house was purchased in New Liskeard.
His varied careers and volunteerism were great accomplishments, but none were as precious to Juergen as his family. He leaves Carole, his wife of 55 years, brother Heinz (Baerbel), daughter Monica (Gavin), son Darren (Laura) and 4 beloved grandsons, Cameron, Alex, Keith and Cole. Juergen also loved his nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law. He taught us all the value of hard work, giving back, and the need to make the right choices. He was a great story teller, who lived with passion. We will always remember how much family meant to him and that he was happiest when we had him surrounded, as was the case when he left us.
Ideally, we would have liked to host a public funeral to celebrate Juergen’s life with all those he has touched. Due to the current circumstances, however, we have opted for a small gathering with the immediate family. In his spirit, in lieu of flowers and visitations, donations would be greatly appreciated to any of the following; the Juergen Leukert Apprentice Scholarship Fund through The Temiskaming Foundation, Community Cancer Care or St Paul’s United Church.
