VANTHOF, Georgina

1934 - 2020

Georgina Vanthof, 85, of Earlton, Ontario passed away on March 20, 2020, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Aris and Arisje Hardeman, on July 18, 1934, in Ederveen, the Netherlands. Georgina immigrated to Canada with her parents and 13 siblings on April 22, 1952, with her youngest brother being born in Canada. She married the late Pieter Vanthof in 1960 and they farmed near Woodstock, Ontario until 1971 when they bought a dairy farm near Earlton. Georgina is survived by her son, John (Ria) of Cobalt, and her grandchildren Stephanie (Rodney), Alex, Dana (Anthony) and Vicky. She is also survived by 11 siblings and a large extended family. Georgina had a sunny personality. She was always smiling and humming, but she had a stubborn streak. It served her well. She was born with spina bifida and was not expected to walk or even crawl. After surgery, she started walking at three and a half. She was not expected to work but found a job that she loved at a flower shop and, many years later, opened her own shop, Armstrong Flowers, in Earlton. She was advised not to try to have a child and once again defied the odds. After her husband’s passing in 1989, Oma’s life revolved around her grandchildren. Georgina was a deeply spiritual person and was a long time member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Englehart. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Any donations in her memory could be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Tri town Extendicare for helping her through her final years. Condolences, contributions and memorial candles may be left at www.mcdonaldfuneralhome.ca.
