George Ylijoki,

GEORGE YLIJOKI,

2021

Mr. George Oscar Ylijoki passed away Monday evening, January 27, 2020 at the age of 85.George was born November 15, 1934 in South Porcupine, the last surviving son of the late Oscar and Esther Ylijoki. Predeceased by his sister, Anne Parkman, three brothers, Eino, Baby Oscar and Raymond, as well as his beloved great nephew, Frank Swanson.George moved to the Tarzwell area with his family in 1945, where he quickly adapted to life in the country. He loved cross-country skiing and was formally recognized for top placement finishes in numerous biathlons over the years.During the early parts of his life, George predominantly worked in lumber camps and the Dome Mine. In later years, he went back to school to upgrade, where he successfully achieved a certificate in General Carpentry. George worked in his trade until his retirement. Forever tinkering, or building something, he was always busy.Fiercely proud of his Finnish heritage, he was grateful to have traveled to Finland twice in his lifetime, where he trod in the footsteps of his parents, making lifelong friends of many distant relatives.George maintained strong independence living on his own, having never married, nor any children of his own. Known for being very social, he found great enjoyment going to town to meet up with friends. Sharing stories over coffee was a treasured pastime.Like his father before him, George was a great lover of music and taught himself to play the accordion by ear. Having possessed one all the years of his life, George could be always found entertaining family and friends, at many a gathering, to the tune of a polka from the old country. At 85 years old, he still cut, split and piled his own firewood. In summer, he delighted in picking and selling wild blueberries. Sometimes picking as many as 85 baskets in a single season, he carefully guarded his little black book containing the names of buyers he never wanted to share…George is survived by his nieces Patricia Parkman-McLeod & husband Bruce, Susan Parkman-Swanson & husband Michael; great nephew, Benjamin Swanson & spouse Amanda, great niece Jessica Parkman & spouse Kyle; great-great nephew, Odin Swanson (George was so proud to be called Tuhva by him); sister-in-law, Esther Ylijoki (late Raymond Ylijoki) and nephew, John.  He leaves behind many other family members and countless friends.George will be greatly missed, everyday. Lepää Rauhassa.Burial to be held at the Round Lake Cemetery at a later date.Offer Condolence for the family of George Ylijoki

I have many good memories of George over the years: going to school with him at the Marquis School House where all the kids would ski to school in the winter, skiing the Kenogami Loppets with him in the 80s, and last but not least George not sharing his blueberry patch locations with me. Recently a few of us old time friends went to Georges with a Birthday Cake to celebrate his birthday. George played his Accordion; it was a really nice visit that we all enjoyed. I only wished we had did this more often. George will be missed. Sincere Condolences to Georges Family. Toivottavasti Siela on mustikoita taivaassa! Helen and Family

We will remember George, the very kind and warm hearted relative for us, far from Canada. George or Yrjö, as we called him, was a cousin to our father, but they never met. However, Yrjö met some other of his cousins when he visited in Finland and Yrjö was a good friend to them. We met Yrjö and now we are so pleased to have been known him. He was one of the few finnish speaking relatives and guide for us during our visit in Canada, some years ago. Also he was our guest in Finland, for a while. He was so familiar since the first moments. He got to live a long life. Our condolences to his family.

Sincere condolences to all of the family. I always enjoyed meeting George when he came to see Annie at Tweedsmuir and often at McDonalds or Pagoda. He would always tease me about keeping an eye on Annie when playing cards and scrabble. I would tell him she taught me so well that none of my friends will play the game with me. Rest in Peace George I will miss seeing your smile.

I never met Georges but I believe he was a friend of my father’s – and that he built the sleep camp at Len’s Temagami cottage. He was liked and respected by Len and his family. I am so sorry for this loss.
