Emilia Julia Giles (nee Melisek) passed away peacefully on September 15, 2016 at the age of 90. Maimie, as she was known to her family and friends, was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and an avid gardener. Maimie was born in Elk Lake, Ontario on May 22nd, 1926. She was the daughter of Julia Melisek (nee Rosicki) and Joseph Melisek. Maimie married Melville David Giles on October 15, 1955. Both and were longtime residents of Elk Lake. Maimie was a dedicated stay-at-home mother and raised six children. Both Maimie and Mel were examples of selflessness and service to the community of Elk Lake. They were married for 55 years until Mel's passing at the age of 90 on April 2nd, 2010. Upon Mel's death, Maimie moved to Toronto to live with her son James where she bravely faced the challenges of dementia. Maimie was predeceased by her parents, Julia and Josef, and by her sister Adele Sexton (nee Melisek). She is survived by her children Julie, Michael (Diane), John (Wendy), James, Alastair (Nicole) and Daniel Giles, sisters Lily Melisek and Camie Adair (nee Melisek), brother Albin Melisek (Helen), and by seven grandchildren: Brittany, Michelle, Kaitlin, Alex, Anthony (Vilanova), Paul and Sarah Giles. The Giles family would like to recognize the extraordinary health care team of Dr. Katja Heineck and nurse Yu-Ling Ma from ParaMed Home Health, Edith and Luc Coderre of Elk Lake, and Maimie's committed caregivers (Abrahan, Gigi, Erin and Natalie) who played a key role in Maimie's daily care over the past six years. Visitation will be held at the Elk Lake Eco Centre on Tuesday, September 20th from 7 to 9 pm and a celebration of life service will take place at the Church of Nativity on Wednesday, September 21st at 11am. Interment will follow at the Elk Lake Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Giles family requests that contributions be made to House Calls, an interdisciplinary mobile medical team serving frail seniors in the Toronto area (www.seniorhousecalls.ca), the Dixon Hall Senior Services Alzheimers’ Program (dixonhall.org/donate), or the Elk Lake Nativity Parish.
