Eileen Miko,

EILEEN MIKO,

2021

Eileen Teresa (Bauer) Miko, aged 76, died peacefully on October 6, 2015 in the Kirkland and District Hospital, after a long battle with heart problems. Eileen was born June 26, 1939 on a farm in Alberta to German immigrant parents. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Andrew (Andy) Miko, brother Raymond Bauer and close friend Jonna MacNeil. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Miko of Kirkland Lake, brothers Ken (Julie), Bernie (Doreen) and Wilbert (Val) as well as her sister Bernice (known as Bunny) – all presently living in Alberta or the US. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in Alaska, Ontario and Alberta plus her friends Odne Petrin of North Bay and Jane Blackwell of Kirkland Lake. Eileen came to Kirkland Lake in 1966 after working as a nurse in California and then as an Operating Room Nurse in Oregon. Eileen first worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses in Kirkland Lake. She then became one of the first nursing instructors at the newly established Northern Ontario Regional School of Nursing. In 1976, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at McGill University in Montreal. She continued to teach for over 25 years establishing the Nursing School’s reputation as one of the best in the province. In the last few months at the Kirkland and District Hospital, she felt safe in the care of “her grads” who treated her with dignity and respect as caring and compassionate colleagues. Eileen was an avid reader, bridge player, gardener, crossword solver and cat lady. She always enjoyed a good argument – a solid strength during her terms as Chair of the Kirkland Lake Board of Education – but also liked to retreat to her cottage on Lake Watebaeg. As per Eileen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be announced in the summer of 2016. Instead of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Advocates for Northern Animals (Northern Bargains, 1-49 Government Rd. West, Kirkland Lake, ON, P2N 2E3). Eileen would appreciate that.Offer Condolence for the family of Eileen Miko

Dear Andrea, My deepest condolences on your loss. It has been more than a few years since we were 6 year olds running around Tech Hughes Mine property. I remember your mom from those days. I was sad when I heard of her passing. Its been a long time since I’ve spent time in Kirkland Lake but I’ll make a point of getting over there this summer to see you, and so you can meet my family. You are in our thoughts. David, Marija, Luka and Marko

Dear Andrea It is with deep sadness I learned of your mother’s passing. Not only did she have a love for teaching, she had a sincere passion for students. I enjoyed working with her when she was on the Kirkland Lake Board of Education. She was an honest trustee who offered valuable input and always made decisions that were in the best interest of the student. It was indeed a pleasure to work with her. Ralph Doner

Dear Andrea, We were sad to read of your mum’s death. We had the privilege of knowing and working with both your parents through Northern College. They were a wonderful asset to the college over the years. Remembering her heart problems, we hope your mum had an enjoyable, relaxing retirement. We remember the day you were born and how happy and proud your parents were. Sincerely, Doug & Wendy van Vianen, Summerland, B.C.

I would like to express my condolence to Eileen Miko’s family. I had the fortunate opportunity to interact with Eileen and her tag team teaching friend and colleague – Joanna MacNeil – at Northern College. Eileen and Joanna brought dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism to the Kirkland Lake Nursing Program and did indeed, collectively, increase the Nursing School’s provincial reputation both in nursing practice and in nursing academics.
