Hartzke, Edward (Ted) April 1928 – Oct 11, 2016 Born in Barber Township, Ontario, to Max and Jane (Brazier), Ted grew up in Kenabeek with his 4 brothers, Richard, Len, Frank and Max, and his sister, Mary (Payne) – Predeceased by all. In 1949 Ted married Mary Jane Palmateer (1988). Together, they built their family home and had four children, Margaret (Ken Alberta), Tom (Heather Porteous deceased), Max (B Armstrong) and Gary (Dianne Zehr). They briefly resided in Gowganda but returned to Kenabeek as markets shifted. Work was very important to Ted and he had many jobs. He logged with a team of horses back at Mendolson and as times changed, used trucks to get the job done. He owned and operated his own township snowplow/dump truck and worked at Rexwood for quite a long time in production and on the chipper. Also, his resume included underground mining with a variety of mines and was captain of the Castle Mine mine rescue team. As part of his mining career he was able to work alongside his brother, Len, at the Ethal Copper Mine. While mucking one shift, they experienced a side-wall cave in which resulted in Ted being pinned by the machine. Luckily, Len was able to turn off the equipment and drag Ted away from the scene. At the Englehart hospital he was treated for a few broken bones but was left with a scar on his lip for the remainder of his life. He retired in 1992 and always had a pot of coffee on and a chair ready for anyone who stopped by. Retirement also gave him time to focus on his interests; Hunting, fishing, mechanics, trail cutting and dragging, flooding the river and spending time back at the camp at Mendolson. The access to Mendolson involved crossing the Montreal River. To do so in the winter the ice had to be flooded so that the machinery could safely cross, which Ted readily did for many years. He also kept his driveway cleared for parking for many others to make the trek. Family was an important part of Ted’s life. He had 9 grandchildren; Laura and Shelly . Karen, Michael and Bradley . Lisa, Julie and Bunnie and Vanessa . 7 great grandchildren; Samantha and Danika (Laura). Sarah (Shelly & Kelly). Kris and Bailey (Karen & Rick). Dahlia and Nixon (Bunnie & Rene) and one great-great grandchild, Nikita (Danika). Ted also had many nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his nephews Eric Hartzke and Jerry Payne Visitation, Friday, October 14th from 7pm to 9pm at Perrin’s Funeral Chapel and Saturday, October 15th at 10am.
