David John Melong,

DAVID JOHN MELONG,

2021

Suddenly on Thursday March 24, 2016 in his 59th year. Born in Kirkland Lake and a lifelong resident, he was predeceased by his father Henry in 1966, and mother Mary in 2007. He was the loving father of Adam and his partner Beverly of Ottawa, and Natasha and her husband Frank of Sudbury. He was proudly known as Papa Dave by one grandson Samuel and a granddaughter Evelyn, whom he barely missed seeing her birth by a couple of days. David is also survived by his soulmate Rhonda Doonan and her daughters Beth and Chloe. Dave was the loving Brother of Norman, Nancy, Michael, Henry, Darlene, Kathy, Kevin and Theresa, and a huge and ever growing family of nephews, nieces and now their children. To the clan, he was the big teddy bear, a large physical presence, however a soft caring soul. A pillar of strength in the early years of the family, he focused on supporting the younger ones and being a role model of how to treat people at a very young age. With a tremendously compassionate and caring personality, Dave was the first person to offer up a place to stay and friendship to anyone in need. The early years at home saw Dave build up a large extended family, and ultimately lifelong friends, who just needed to be part of a family. What he had was yours if needed, including his family to share. Dave worked the majority of his life in the grocery business and spent most of that time laughing, smiling, and sharing a story with anyone who came by the “store”. He was a mainstay of the community and all who knew him, and a great resource for the next great recipe, how to cook it and where to find the right ingredients, most often dropping everything to personally help find them. His fierce passion for cooking and his skills on the barbeque will be missed by his family and friends. Menus will never be the same. Cremation has taken place at French Family Funeral Home & Crematorium. A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held later this spring, with friends and family re-uniting to light the burners for him one last time. Donations can be made in Dave’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (2300 Yonge St. Suite 1300 Toronto, ON. M4P 1E4) or a charity of your choice, keeping in mind Dave’s respect and admiration for the work the Hospital for Sick Kids (555 University Ave. Toronto, ON. M5G 1X8) have provided for so many.Offer Condolence for the family of David John Melong

We were very saddened and shocked to read of Dave’s passing. He was always a great help to us when we were looking for something in the store. At times when I am sure he did not feel like smiling he did his best at saying positive. We spoke with him on Thursday just before noon. As always he was pleasant and smiling. Such a loss for his family and other employees who he worked with. As for his children it is always sad to know there has been an end to their innocence. They are in our thoughts,

We are shocked and so sad to hear of David,s sudden death. One of the highlights of our summer returns to Kirkland Lake was to see David and enjoy his great humour, positive attitude, and knowledge as to what was happening in town. We also looked forward to hear all about the complete Melong family. In many ways the community will never be the same. Our condolences to Adam and Natasha and Rhonda, and the rest of the Melong family. Brian and Gale

I can’t believe that two of my most favorite people on the planet have left us this week. Margaret Stratford and Dave Melong. Every year upon my return to Round Lake one of my first stops would be at the Independent, looking forward to being greeted by a huge smile and a bear hug from this wonderful man. Over the years we shared many stories, laughs and even some tears. Dave spoke about his kids, going away to school, coming home, getting jobs, getting married, him cooking for the wedding, and most especially, having grand kids. He was “over the moon”! He was always eager to share a recipe or try a new one. Trips to the grocery store aren’t going to be the same and I shall think of him fondly every time I walk through the door. To Nancy, Norm and family I know how you will miss him and I really do send you my most sincere condolences. Rhonda, although I have not met you, Dave’s smile when he spoke about you told me you were very special to him. He had a gentle true heart and I shall be one of many who will miss seeing him. Lynn Elliott.

Lynn Elliott, March 1, 2021

So sad to hear of the sudden loss of Dave. My brother Brian worked with Dave at Dominion and in later years at YIG’s. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Melong family during this difficult time.

Pat Kiely, March 1, 2021

Rhonda, I was so shocked and sad to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. He was such a sweetheart and a truly happy and kind soul. He always loved to tell me what he was going to cook or bbq for you guys – and how he was going to do it! I was so happy for you both that you had found each other and although your time together was not near long enough, it was a true gift that will be yours always. Kevin and Ang , Kathy and Pete and all the brothers and sisters we are sure that Dave’s passing has left a huge hole in your family and your hearts, but his light and love will surround you always. To his children – you were the light of his life and he loved to brag about you to whoever entered the store and was lucky enough to have a chat with him. It always left you in a better mood! Our whole community has suffered a loss at the passing of such a special and loving person. He was loved by many. Paul, Marjorie and family

Marjorie and Paul Harvey, March 1, 2021

Natasha, Adam, Rhonda, Norman, Nancy, Michael, Henry, Darlene, Kathy, Kevin, Theresa….truly saddened to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. While Dave & I lost touch over the past few years I still hold wonderful memories of our friendship. Fond memories of our days working together at Dominion and the carefree times we spent celebrating our youth in many of the finer establishments of Kirkland Lake. Dave was very proud of his family and I remember the day he brought me down to the end of Main St.. to meet his wonderful mother Mary and all his siblings. It seemed there was another Melong to meet every time you turned a corner. Dave was a great friend, best man at my wedding, and truly a gentle soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you…………….Rick & Glenda

To Dave’s Family, It seems like yesterday Dave joined us at Northern College. He came to my office to be introduced and we laughed. We didnt need any introductions. I felt lucky to have yet another great co-worker who was also a friend. I am sure you all know Dave lit up when he talked about each of you. His smile became brighter and bigger as he shared his family times. It was clear to all of us that you meant the world to him. I worked with Dave at Northern College, he was a very friendly and social man. Everyday he would take 5-10 minutes and come sit in my office and just shoot the breeze with me. Telling me all the amazing stories about his life and his family. He was a very proud man and told me daily about stuff the had accomplished. Dave is an amazing man who would do anything for anyone and not ask for a thing in return, He truly will be missed.

RIP Dave Melong you were second to none and will be missed dearly by many and I’m one of them. I met Dave while delivering bread for my Dad’s bakery to Dominion grocery store. I never had to wait to bring our products via the back docking when Dave was there. We would talk and laugh during the whole delivery process. Dam fine man. He was also my Dad’s favourite at the bakery as he would come often to get his favourite rye bread and I mean many loaves. He was welcome by my Dad to just walk in the back where all the baking was and they would talk and laugh always…going to miss that that big smile of yours Dave. My deepest sympathy to family and immediate friends. Micheal Stevanovich.
