We were very saddened and shocked to read of Dave’s passing. He was always a great help to us when we were looking for something in the store. At times when I am sure he did not feel like smiling he did his best at saying positive. We spoke with him on Thursday just before noon. As always he was pleasant and smiling. I can’t believe that two of my most favorite people on the planet have left us this week. Margaret Stratford and Dave Melong. Every year upon my return to Round Lake one of my first stops would be at the Independent, looking forward to being greeted by a huge smile and a bear hug from this wonderful man. Over the years we shared many stories, laughs and even some tears. Dave spoke about his kids, going away to school, coming home, getting jobs, getting married, him cooking for the wedding, and most especially, having grand kids. He was “over the moon”! He was always eager to share a recipe or try a new one. Trips to the grocery store aren’t going to be the same and I shall think of him fondly every time I walk through the door. To Nancy, Norm and family I know how you will miss him and I really do send you my most sincere condolences. Rhonda, although I have not met you, Dave’s smile when he spoke about you told me you were very special to him. He had a gentle true heart and I shall be one of many who will miss seeing him. I have great memories of Dave from my childhood, playing Chase, Kick the Can, backyard sleep overs (and the occasional garden raiding). Dave was always generous and had a big heart for anyone who needed help. Dave wanted to be your friend and he always succeed in this. I worked with Dave at Northern College, he was a very friendly and social man. Everyday he would take 5-10 minutes and come sit in my office and just shoot the breeze with me. Telling me all the amazing stories about his life and his family. He was a very proud man and told me daily about stuff the had accomplished. Dave is an amazing man who would do anything for anyone and not ask for a thing in return, He truly will be missed.

RIP Dave Melong you were second to none and will be missed dearly by many and I’m one of them. I met Dave while delivering bread for my Dad’s bakery to Dominion grocery store. I never had to wait to bring our products via the back docking when Dave was there. We would talk and laugh during the whole delivery process. Dam fine man. He was also my Dad’s favourite at the bakery as he would come often to get his favourite rye bread and I mean many loaves. He was welcome by my Dad to just walk in the back where all the baking was and they would talk and laugh always…going to miss that that big smile of yours Dave.
