David Alan Armstrong died peacefully in Toronto on Saturday, January 17th, 2015, surrounded by his family. David resided in Haileybury, Ontario with his family for thirty five years. He was the President and General Manager of Temiskaming Printing Company and Publisher of the Temiskaming Speaker. David is survived by his wife of forty one years and best friend Trudi (Wilson), his children and their spouses, Jason (Chantelle), Sarah (Jeffrey), Jonathan (Lila) and Justin and his six grandchildren, Madeleine, Wilson, Molly, Colin, Andrew and Ian. David is also survived by his brothers, Robert (Mary Anne) and John (Barbara), his brothers-in-law, John (Janis) Wilson, Jim (Karen) Wilson and Michael (Laurie) Wilson and many loving nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his mother and father, Ruth and Herson Armstrong and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marcella and Leonard Wilson. Born December 3, 1948, David grew up in Sarnia, Ontario. He loved sports, especially basketball, baseball and golf. He attended the University of Western Ontario where he met the love of his life, Trudi, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. After several years in Toronto working for Bell Canada, Trudi and David chose to return to Northern Ontario to take on a new challenge and to raise their family. In 1974, in a joint partnership with Trudi and his father-in-law, Leonard Wilson, David purchased the All Seasons Motor Inn. In 1979, the same partnership purchased the Temiskaming Printing Company and the Temiskaming Speaker. David led Temiskaming Printing as President and General Manager and as Publisher of the Speaker until his retirement in 2011. David dedicated his life to his family, the newspaper business and to his community. He will be remembered as a quiet, kind and principled man and an effective leader and community builder. David worked tirelessly to ensure that the Speaker remained a high quality weekly newspaper and a voice for his community. He held numerous leadership positions at both the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspaper Association of which he is a Past President. In addition to his work at the Speaker, David contributed to the Tri-Town (now Temiskaming Shores) community in many ways, including through his active involvement and leadership as President of the Rotary Club of Haileybury, as a founding member of the Tri-Town Foundation (now Temiskaming Foundation) and as a member of the Parish Council at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. David's family would like to thank the many friends who have provided support, comfort and love to them and to David over the last few years, Father John Lemire and the many wonderful professionals at Temiskaming Hospital, the Houses of Providence and Toronto East General Hospital who cared for David during his time of need. David's family will receive friends at the Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard, Ontario on Tuesday, January 20th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 21st at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in New Liskeard, Ontario.
