HARVEY, Daniel George

1958 - 2024

A Life well Lived

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel George Harvey on Monday, February 12, 2024 after a long, courageous battle with cancer at the age of 65. He is predeceased by his parents Helen and Paul Harvey.

Despite his long battle, Dan lived by the motto that “Life is Good”. He brought positivity and warmth to every situation. Dan was a generous, hardworking man with a great sense of humour. He appreciated the simple things in life like spending time with his family, fishing on the sand bar, his annual hunting and ski doo trips and coffee with his “Surprisingly Happy it’s Thursday” Crew.

As a child, Dan played and excelled at every sport including competitive hockey with his longtime friend Denis Houle. He went on to graduate from Northern College with a degree in Civil Engineering and spent most of his 25-year career with the City of Temiskaming Shores as the head of public works. Dan made an impact on many people’s lives as a mentor, teammate, coach and loyal friend. His love for his family and friends was always felt strongly.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Susan Harvey, his two daughters Melissa (Josh) Wood and Megan Harvey (Mathieu Houle) and his grandkids Frankie, Ariel and Axel. He will be missed by his sisters: Diane Edgar (Greg Lowns), Louise (Alain) Cormier and by his brother Mike (Myrna) Harvey. Dan will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, friends and colleagues.

A visitation will be held at the Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative – Perrin Chapel, 128 Whitewood Avenue W, New Liskeard on Sunday, February 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow in the funeral home chapel.

We are sincerely grateful to the many friends, hospital staff, chemo nurses and Dr. Corneil who supported and comforted Dan over the years.

In memory of Dan, the family is requesting donations to Community Cancer Care.

Sue and the girls as well to Diane, Mike and Louise

Just a Month ago met up with Dan at the CUBS gathering, hadn’t seen him in years. We had a great chat regarding our Sutcliffe Cr street hockey games( don’t know why he always wanted to play in net ,but you couldn’t score on him!), playing for the Cubs and the following year he was playing for KL Huskies while I played for Canadore.
He was so happy with his life (despite the cards he was dealt), he brought me up to date on their family (Susan,Megan and Melissa) and how much he enjoyed being a grandfather.
He was a very good man and friend.
(Hope the fishing is good up there my friend)

I'm so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I hadn't seen Dan for quite some time but heard of the brave struggles he was going through for many years. I was very fortunate to meet up with Dan at a recent Cubs reunion. He was obviously as tough off the ice as he was on the ice. He was one of the good guys. May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Dan ( whom I know as « Harv »). I came to know Harv when I was 18 or 19. He came to the Hamilton area to go to school and he lived with Denis Houle and me while we were playing hockey for the local Jr. A team. I would then spend time with Dan each spring/summer fishing at the opening of pickerel season or even during the Miner’s Festival that was celebrated in the Tri-Town when I would come up to visit Denis during the off season.
Sadly, as life went on, I was unable to make it up past my mid-twenties. However, after almost 40 years I was fortunate to come to that same fishing trip last May at Lake Lady Evelyn and renew my friendship with Harv. I feel blessed to have known Harv and doubly blessed to have spent time with him fishing last May. I will always remember Harv’s positive outlook on life which I memorialize with the following saying that Harv uttered one frosty morning on one of our fishing trips as he was making some toast over a roaring outdoor fire with a make-shift device he had fashioned from his amazing imagination. Harv said: «  Le toast, c’est bon eh! ». Sounds simple but me and my younger brother, who joined me that one trip, have always used «  le toast, c’est bon eh! » to this day as a euphemism for the good things in life. Each time I smile a silent smile thinking of Harv. He was a wonderful man.

All the Harvey's and extended families

How lucky we are to have known Danny Harvey!! He was a quiet, sweet, kind, funny, deeply good person from the beginning to the end. Danny and his extended family were always a part of our lives. His dad (Paul) and his mom (Helen) and his mom's brother, (Fred Leveillé) were very close with my dad and mom when they lived in New Liskeard. I think Danny's uncle Fred was my dad's best friend when they were little tucsons. And, keeping those same beautiful connections, Danny was Dénis Houle's best friend their whole lives. They were inseparable. Like brothers. So whenever we visited Dénis and his family, Danny was usually there. Especially at "The River." Our families fished at the Blanche every Spring. Danny was always there. He is in every picture my dad (André Houle) and mon oncle (Claude Houle) have that involves holding up fish. (I used to think he was also one of my cousins!). Almost every Fall, my dad, Claude, Dénis and Danny used to moose hunt together in "The Bus." I don't think my Dad was ever happier than when he was out there with those guys, even if they didn't get a moose. The pictures at the end of the hunt: 4 guys, all sporting beards, all dirty and all smiling from ear to ear.

That Danny (and Sue's) daughter Megan married his best friend Dénis (and Francine's) son, Mathieu, is an amazing continuation of such a long story of love between families. I'm so lucky & proud to be part of it. And so sad to have lost "Harv".*

*(Because "Dénis" is a French name, and "Danny" is an English name, and they could be pronounced in different ways depending on whether you were French or English speaker, we would often get them mixed up: Q:"Dad, who got the big dorée?" Answers: "Denny"... "Dan"... "De-neeee" ..."Da-neee"... Who??? Then my dad started calling him "Harv". That helped. My sisters and I called him "Superman" but that's another story... :) ). Whereever you are, may the fishing and hunting be good.

Even more than living on the same street, I really got to know Dan more at City Hall. I quickly saw what a kind and giving gentleman he was and his love for his family was so evident.
My sympathies to you during this sad time. I know he will forever watch over all whom he loves. Praying God’s comforting arms surround you all.
