MCKINNON (NEE HANSON), Betty

2021

It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of our treasured mother, Betty McKinnon, on February 26, 2021.

Betty was born November 15, 1924, in Larder Lake, ON to the late William Hanson and Florence Gauthier.  The family moved to the wiles of Northern Manitoba during the depression returning to Kirkland Lake in 1933 where she completed her schooling at KLCVI.  Betty joined the war effort by working for the Department of National Defence in Ottawa.  At the end of the war, Betty returned to Kirkland Lake where she met her future husband, John McKinnon.  They married in 1948 and were life-long residents.  Betty was an active member of the Federal United Church and later the Trinity United Church.  She was also a founding member of The Silver Wings club of Kirkland Lake.

Betty was pre-deceased by her husband John McKinnon and brother Harris and sister-in-law Olive Hanson, brother Albert Hanson and nephew Carl Hanson.Betty is survived by her loving children Bill (Glenda) McKinnon and Lori (Derrick) Lavallee; her cherished grandchildren Shannon (Jason) Flemming, Jeff (Emmy) McKinnon, Lindsey McKinnon and Christina Lavallee and great-granddaughters Kaylee, Jenna and Chelsea Flemming.  A loving aunt to her dear nieces.  Fondly remembered by sister-in-law Pearl Hanson and numerous cousins.

A special thank-you to the staff at “Closing the Gap” for their wonderful care and attention to our mother as well as the staff at Kirkland and District Hospital. In addition, we would like to extend our gratitude to CCAC and Home Care.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a graveside service will be held at Kirkland Lake cemetery in the summer of 2021, a date to be announced.

In recognition of our mothers’ great love of animals, if desired, memorial donations to Advocates for Northern Animals can be made online at http://klana.ca/index.php/donate-to-advocates/ or by mail.

Dear Lori, Bill. And families Just wanted to extend my condolences to you guys on the loss of Betty. She was one of a kind, and I thought the world of her. Was always fun being around her and my mom together because they were hysterical. Its kind of the end of an era. She was so supportive when my mom died and I never forgot that so if I can offer that support to you I will. Take care of yourself and I will be talking to you soon. Love Elaine and Marilyn too.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. Another great Federal lady has passed away. This brings back lots of memories of growing up in Federal. She always made you feel welcome in her home and she put up with a lot of our shenanigans. There are so many memories that will help you through this sad time. You are in my thoughts & prayers.

Lori & Bill (& families)

To Lori, Bill and your families:
I am so saddened to read about the loss of your mother.
Your mom was such a wonderful lady! I remember all of the times I spent at your home and she was accommodating for, not only me but for the tribe of teenagers who gathered in your living room while she spent time talking with all of us. She was a gracious host, providing us lunches and desserts, while always wearing a smile!
I know she'll missed by many; and, I'm one among the many! Sandi

I am sorry to hear about Betty. One of many fond memories-when Bill & I travelled to Toronto for school with her and John, we stayed over night at a motel and I shared a bed with Betty. For my graduation she gave me a card and signed "Betty bedhugger". Any time she sent me a letter after that was signed the same way. I still have the card and some letters and will treasure them forever. She was a great person so kind and considerate. Every now and again I would see her and she would always have a big hug for me. She had a way of making people feel special. She will always have a place in my heart. So sorry for your loss. Lana

I had the honour of meeting your Mom and I believe your father during my practice as a RN and later as a NP. She was a lovely lady and she amazed me with her stories of her years during the war. Her important war efforts will always be appreciated.
I am sorry for your loss is a beautiful person in your lives.
