sorry about your lost Ann and family
Bernice Rosko (née Ellard)
December 19, 1924 –May 6, 2020It is with deep sadness that the Rosko family announces the peaceful passing of Bernice Rosko at the Cowichan District Hospital, in Duncan British Columbia in her 96th year. Beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.Born in Toronto, Ontario, Bernice was the daughter of the late Annie and Arthur Ellard. She was predeceased by her husband Nicholas Rosko, her sisters Cathy, Anne, Olive, Jean and Margie and her loving Son-in-Law George Hambley. Bernice is survived by her 9 children, Michael (Debbie Marr), Patrick (Martha McSherry), Nikki (late George Hambley), Susan (Bryan Lafrance), Tom (Elayne Meagher), Annie (Sonny Kmyta), Joseph (Terry Montague), Tracy (Harold Johnston), James (Paulette Souriol), 22 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, her beloved dog Rosy and an extended family that is too large to count.Bernice was the youngest of six children. In the late 1940’s, she moved to the Kirkland Lake area with her husband, Nick, where she lived until the early 1990’s. During her 95 years, Bernice witnessed many joys and many struggles but through it all she managed to raise 9 children and eventually complete her education to become a Registered Nurse’s Assistant. She worked at the Kirkland and District hospital for more than 20 years until her retirement in 1990 and was lovingly known by her friends and colleagues as “Twiggy” for her slight build. Bernice touched the hearts of everyone she met and was rarely seen without a smile regardless of the situation. Her strong faith in God and her church never wavered and she passed on her strong moral values and work ethic to her children and her grandchildren. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren without limit and was looking forward to the birth of 2 more great-grandchildren in the latter half of 2020. Bernice lived in Duncan, B.C. for approximately 28 years where she continued to spread her friendship and kindness. She enjoyed spending time with her immediate and extended families, and looked forward to every visit she made to Ontario. To quote one of her grandchildren “She lived large”. Even when she was the most ill, she brought smiles to the faces of staff and patients in the Cowichan District Hospital when she was found trying to assist the nursing and cleaning staff by folding towels and straightening the beds or trying to cheer up a patient who she believed was more ill than she.
Bernice had an enormous heart for which she had room for everyone. Most of all, she was able to maintain her fabulous sense of humor until her death. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and everyone she met.Thank you to the nurses and doctors and other medical staff that looked after Mom, all the many friends and relatives who gave her friendship and assistance over the years when family couldn’t be present, and most of all the priests and nuns of St. Edwards Church, Duncan, B.C.Celebrations of Bernice’s life will be held in Duncan, B.C. in Ottawa and Kirkland Lake, ON at a later date.A donation to your favorite charity in Bernice’s name would be appreciated.Offer Condolence for the family of Bernice Rosko (née Ellard)

I remember Mrs. Rosko during my childhood in Larder Lake. I can picture her slight staturealways walking at a fast pace like she was always on a mission. I remember her smiling a lot and always being cheerful when my mom and I would meet her. And she had my admiration when I was a teenager , when I heard that, after raising all her children, she went on to become a registered nurses assistant and went to work at KL hospital.
