BOND, Austra

1939 - 2016

Austra Bond, a young-at-heart 77 year old, sweetheart of Garfield’s, came to Canada with no middle name and a peculiar first name. She arrived from Latvia as a young child where her strength and stubbornness served her well, learning a new language and the Canadian way. She became a mother of four and helped her sweetheart build a successful business known as Bond Bros. Auto Body that they owned for 37 years, and then a local cab service in their golden years. She always presented herself as a lady and was a person of many talents-knitting, crocheting, cooking and gardening. Fond memories were always created during the numerous shop barbecues, Christmas dinners, summers on the houseboat and trips taken from coast to coast. She loved telling jokes, even if she muddled up the punch line and her son Don always joked that she would never get a job as a dispatch given her sense of direction. Her greatest joy, next to being a wife and mom, was being a Nana. She showed her love with big bear hugs, always had stories to tell and like to cause mischief with them whenever she could. She will be missed by those close to her but especially by her sweetheart, her husband of 60 years, Garfield. Also survived by her brother Imants (Sointu) Straumers, sister Irene (Bill) Radditz, son Gary Bond, daughters Carla (Don) Aultman, Leanne (Bruce) Peters and daughter-in-law Sue (Don) White; grandchildren Jamie Bond-Gauthier, Cory Bond, Melanie Parker, Jeff Bond, Tina Bond, Christian Peters and Mackenzie Peters; great-grandchildren Logan and Kate Parker, Jayla, Kailee and Ashlyn Bond, Brantley and Emmerson Bond-Gauthier, Cory James and Harrison Bond. Austra was predeceased by her moth Otillijia Straumers, step-father Edgar Straumers, father Karl Klauss and her son Donald Bond. She will be greatly missed by those near and dear to her heart. She always referred to herself as a tough D.P. (displaced person) and that she was, until her last breath. ‘We know Nana, you had one too and the wheels fell off” XO XO XO Cremation has taken place.
