Leonard Baird,

LEONARD BAIRD,

2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Len Baird announces his passing at Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake on Wed. Sept 1, 2010 in his 94th year. Len was predeceased by his wife Mabel (nee Pimlott); parents Hannah and James Baird and siblings Iola Coulter and Bill Baird. Cherished father of Mel Baird (Penny), Barbara Reade (Bob), and Heather Thompson (Harvey), beloved grandfather (Poppa) of Darrin Reade, Melanie and Andrew Baird and great grandfather of Darrick and Andrea Reade. Len is also survived by his sister Grace Quinn and many nephews and nieces. Len lived a long, beautiful and fulfilling life. Along with service in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and a career as service manager for Caswell Motors Chrysler Dealer, he was highly involved with family, community service, sports and municipal politics. His public service involved long stints with the Legion (over 65 years), the Lions, the Masons, and the Civic Service Association. Len was extremely proud of all the men and women who worked tirelessly with him to provide recreation for children and adults in the Kirkland Lake area. Together, they planned, organized funding, and developed and provided programs and facilities such as ball parks, tennis courts, hockey and figure skating arenas and swimming pools. It was a very proud day for Len and his family when the Town of Kirkland Lake named their new ball park for him. Len was the manager of the midget and juvenile hockey teams sponsored by the Lions for many, many years. Len was also instrumental in the development of Teck Pioneer Residence, one of the finest facilities of its kind in Ontario and where he spent his last years. He took a keen interest in the local political scene and was elected as both a councillor and as Reeve of Kirkland Lake. Len was a lifetime member of the congregation and on the board of the Federal United Church. He loved people, remembered everyone he met, and worked tirelessly to improve and develop his beloved Kirkland Lake. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Monette – French Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service in the “Teck-Hughes” Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Len will be laid to rest in the Kirkland Lake Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Teck Pioneer Residence, Toburn Wing (P.O. Box 3800 Kirkland Lake, ON. P2N 3P4) for upgrading and additional equipment or to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.Offer Condolence for the family of Leonard Baird

Please accept our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your Dad. Before he resided in the home, I always enjoyed meeting him on the street and having a chat about the old neighbourhood. You’re in our thoughts and prayers. Barbara Whittle and Cindy Whittle Charette

I would like to express our deepest sympathies in regard to Len’s passing. He was an invaluable citizen of Kirkland Lake, and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. His efforts and accomplishments regarding the Township of Teck & the Town of Kirkland Lake will long be remembered by many. Also remembered, his lively personality and kindness to all he met in his travels about town. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. May you all find comfort in the love of family and friends, and fond memories of Len.

Greetings from Lahti. Finland In view of this obituary the “joy” of life is eternal. It is a remarkable account of a man, his family and his life long community service for the town of Kirkland Lake. It is a true story amongst the few in the town finest citizens. Len Baird had a disposition of intregity rich in spirit who loved people.May God be with you and the “joy” of life continue in your household to-day in love, peace and spirit. Psalms 19. 13-14

Barbara, Mel, Heather and Family I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I had the pleasure of working with him on a volunteer project some years ago. He was indeed a gentleman and a gentle man. Please accept my sincere condolences. Donna Hanson

Barb, Heather, Melvin and family. I was very sorry to hear about your Dad. We could not have had a better neighbour. He was a kind, thoughtful man with a great sense of humour. I have so many good memories of him. One of my favorites is the ice rink he built out back every winter. When we wanted to skate at night we would go knock on the door and he would turn the lights on the rink. When we were finished skating we would knock again and he would turn them off. It didn’t matter if you were the only one outside using the rink the lights got turned on. He will always have a special place in my heart. Sincerely Dianne
