Harvey was a proud railroader all his life. As a young boy he knew he wanted to be a railroader. He read his dad’s Rule Book and Rule 106 stated “Trains will run under the direction of the Conductor” – so he thought if he was going to be on the train he may as well be “boss”. He started with the CNR at Allandale in 1950 as a brakeman. Left CNR on Jan 1, 1951 and started with the ONR Jan 13, 1951. Active in the Union (B of RT) – held position of President of Local 815; Local Chairman; Legislative Representative; and ended as Vice Chair of Ontario Legislative Board – eventually changed to UTU. He qualified as Locomotive Engineer in 1973. Also held position of Polar Bear Express Coordinator; Passenger Services Coordinator; Trainmaster; Rules Instructor; Manager of Customer Service (overseeing rail and bus, Hanna Bay Goose Camp, Cheecheemaun). Retired from ONR to become Trainmaster and Master Mechanic with VIA Rail. Retired from VIA to become a TIBS Instructor with CNR between Belleville and Jasper. 42 years of railroading. On Sept 17, 2009 Illustriative Brother Middaugh was coronated Honourable Inspector General 33rd Degree Highest Scottish Rite Masonry – recognition of contributions to Masonry, Church, and Community. 2008 Englehart Ambassador for the Town’s Centennial, Councillor Town of Englehart 1968 to 1976, and again 2004 to Present – also Deputy Mayor, Championed the start of the ONR’s Santa Claus Express Train approx 30 years ago (which is still entertaining the children of Northeastern Ontario every November), Past Grand Master of Englehart Masonic Lodge, Past Vice Chair of Englehart Hospital Board, Member of Temiskaming Board of Health, Past President of the Englehart Rotary Club and also the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award, Enjoyed delivering “Meals on Wheels”, an avid fisherman & member of Christ Church Anglican. He is survived by his loving wife Gwen (Peterman); children Mike (Lynne); Wendy; Peter (Linda) and Angela (Ken); brother Doug (Marg). The family of the late Mr. Harvey Middaugh will receive friends at the McDonald Funeral Home, Englehart, Friday, March 19, from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm, with a Masonic Serive at 7:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Saturday, March 20, at 11:00 am. Rev. Linda White officiating. In memory contributions to Clinic Expansion Fund, Christ Church Anglican or House of Kin - Sudbury will be greatly appreciated by the family. Harvey was a loving husband, proud father and poppa; hard working, honest, humble, full of dignity and pride. He loved his community – very giving to the community, never expecting anything in return – “it is your duty to help others”. Most peaceful in his fishing boat.
