Joe passed away peacefully in his own home on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 12:12 p.m. after a five year courageous battle with cancer. Joe was born in Austria in 1943. Predeceased by his father, Guenther Thurow in 2002 at 92 years of age, Joe’s mother, Rosa Thurow in 2006 at 94 years of age. Joe is survived by his extended family The Korhonen’s, June and Peter, Debbie and Danny Barrette, Penny and Garry Fournel, Bonnie and Bruce Crichton of Thunder Bay. “The Boys” Stephan and Jamie Barrette and Karter Korhonen; “The Girls” Kennedy Korhonen, Amelia and Katlyn Fournel; Joe’s Friends Roy Newman, Dale Poulin, Alphonse McLean, Mike Roberts, Roy Myelde, Pete Roy and Gord Klockars. A very special thank you to Dr. Richard Denton, Kim and Nora (VON nurses), Judy, Debbie and Kim from the Kirkland Lake Medical Centre, who helped us keep Joe home. A family memorial will be held for Joe along with his mom and dad where they will be laid to rest together at the Round Lake Cemetery at a date to be announced later. Joe was a chemical engineer employed by Cyanamid of Canada, Niagara Falls, Delta Explosives in Montreal, until coming to Kirkland Lake as vice-president of Nordex Explosives Ltd. for 30 years until Joe retired in 1999.
