Donald’s children and grandchildren
Lost a childhood friend from my home town of Kirkland Lake today — Donald Sampson. My parents were friends of his parents when I lived in Kirkland as a kid from birth in 1940 to age 11. I remember one memorable Christmas we visited the Sampsons and I got to watch in awe as Donald operated his marvellous train set. He also had a fantastic stamp collection. Another great memory was when our family spent a whole summer’s day at the Sampson’s cottage, which if memory serves me was on Lake Kenogami. We went swimming, fishing and motorboat riding.
Years after our family left Kirkland, I came back for one of the big reunions in the 1960s and I visited Donald in his downtown store for “old times sake.”
Rest now, old friend, I’ve never forgotten you.

Our deepest sympathies in the passing of your father. May he Rest In Peace. By the way, I still have the Composite Index games that he sold and signed for me. He was quite a character! Enjoy talking with him every time he came to my shop.

Dear Terri, I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. 30 years ago when I worked for the town of KL I was in Carls Office Supply often. I wonder if the store is still in the family. My thoughts and prayers r with u at this difficult time.

Sorry to hear of Dons passing. Don and I spent many hours behind the stick of our Challengers...flying to Montreal a few times and numerous other destinations. We'd make our plans usually during lunch at the Capitol Restaurant and flip to see who paid. We would often say 'it's time to get some wind under our ass...where are we flying today'. Don was a smooth pilot and usually greased the landings. He'll be missed by us fellow pilots and we'll miss the hanger stories.

My deepest condolences to the Sampson family. Don was a good friend for more years than I care to admit... he will be missed my many. See you on the other side Don!

Lizzie, Terri and the rest
I'm so sorry to hear about Don. He was smart, funny, rude and rudely funny. I think that's why we got along. So many evenings at Crystal doing all the things cottagers do. He can’t be replaced and has left a big space in Kirkland Lake that cannot be filled.
Enjoy yourself wherever you are Don and enjoy flying without the bounds of earth holding you back.

I am very saddened to hear of Don’s passing. He was a permanent fixture at the Goldland and spent countless hours day and night playing snooker and kibitzing with everyone there. My deepest sympathies go out to you Terri and to your entire family.

So sorry to hear this news. I dealt with Don a lot when I worked at town hall. I would run over to the store to pick up 1 thing and get back to work an hour later. Because you never left the store without having an in-depth conversation with Don…about anything and everything. Deepest condolences.

I first met Don when I took karate lessons from him in grade 7 and 8 at Central Public School. Later I had the privilege of working for him at Carl's Office Supply while in high school...with Don it really didn't seem like work, and he made everyone he met feel special. I am so sorry for your loss.

Terri, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Don was my mentor in the 80's when I was just a teenager learning to play snooker at Mary's Pool Hall. He taught me so much about the game and I was always eager to play him and learn his tricks. He never backed down from a game and I always enjoyed playing pool with him. I wouldn't be the pool player I am today if it wasn't for your father. He will be missed.

The family of Don Sampson
I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. I worked with Don while he was the accountant at the Northern Daily News and I was always pleased whenever he would tell people that I had the fastest fingers on the very old model calculaters that we had back then. Before covid I would often see him at the Pagoda when the morning group met. Rest peacefully Don.

I remember Don from the days we played hooky to go and play snooker at Jerrys. I believe the last time I saw him was playing snooker at Robazzas. Always good to deal with him at Carls Stationary. He'll be missed in the community.
