Bernice (Jack) Smith was born Dec. 4, 1923 to Hugh & Lucy (Rooney) Jack. Passed away Monday February 21, 2011 at Northview Nursing Home, Englehart, with her family by her side. She married Chester Smith Nov. 10, 1939. They lived on Poverty Hill farm in Evanturel Twp., Heaslip, all their married life. They raised 6 children and are survived by Jim (Cathy) Ufford, Anne (John) Cragg & Neil Smith of Englehart, daughter-in-law Micheline Smith, Charlton, Barbara (Fred) Burrows of Tomstown, Ellen (Milton) MacPherson of Englehart. She has 14 grandchildren & numerous great grandchildren & great great grandchildren & her many friends. Also by her sisters Margaret Smith, Mabel Hill & brother John Oliver Jack. She was pre-deceased by her husband Chester, son Harold, grandson Larry Cragg, her sister Florence Dudgeon & brothers Allen, Arnold, Joe, Neil & Henry Jack. She belonged to the Heaslip Willing Workers for over 50 years, the Englehart Agriculture Society for over 40 years. She was a volunteer for many organizations. She gave 110 % of herself to anything she believed in. She was a member of Earlton Trinity United Church, Earlton, then Emmanuel United Church, Englehart. She received the Ontario Bi-Centennial Medal in 1984. She & her sister Margaret received the Senior of the year Award in 1994 for Evanturel Twp. She received the Ontario Millenium Award for more than 30 years of volunteer work. She was very crafty at handwork and a marvellous cook. She won many quilt prizes at the district fall fairs and had several go to the Quilt Competition in Toronto. Some of the hobbies included knitting, crocheting, decorating wedding cakes, sewing & quilting. Her quilts were made from scraps or new fabrics. Each of her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren have received a prized quilt. She has left behind a great legacy. Her family was a very important part of her life and she will be sadly missed. The family of the late Mrs. Bernice Smith will receive friends at the McDonald Funeral Home, Englehart, Wednesday, February 23, from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Emmanuel United Church on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 1 :00 pm. Rev. Jessica Cottrell officiating. Spring interment will be at the Englehart Cemetery. In memory contributions to Englehart & District Hospital Fund, Englehart Hospital Clinic Expansion Fund or the Northview Nursing Home Activity Fund will be greatly appreciated by the family.
