GABBANI, William “Bill”

November 18, 1950 – February 24, 2022

We are saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Bill at the age of 71.

Best friend and soulmate of Isabelle Goulet. Proud and loving father of James Johnston (Laurie). Fun, loving, and adventurous grandfather to Landyn and Thomas. Father of Natasha Chalwell. Beloved son of Ernestine and Dario Gabbani (both deceased) Much loved brother of Michael Gabbani (Lynda Chilibeck), Louise Othmer (Lance Othmer), Theresa Bonney and predeceased by brother-in-law Gary Bonney.

Bill was deeply loved and admired by his nieces and nephews, Kelly Rocheford, Kyle Othmer, Justin & Jonathan Bonney, and Dario & Sophia Gabbani.

Bill grew up the oldest of the four Gabbani children and loved his hometown and community of Cobalt. He was endlessly invested in supporting his community and served as a devoted town councillor up until his passing.

Bill was an electrician by trade and retired from his position with the Ontario Ministry of Labour as a dedicated Mines and Safety Inspector for over 20 years.

Bill’s love of fitness and the outdoors was unmatched. He was at his happiest during hunting and fishing trips to John Black, the Montreal River and Peterborough, and when dashing through the trails at his beloved ski club. He shared his affinity for hunting, fishing, and skiing with his family, friends and community.

Bill was committed to his community and devoted much of his time to helping others. His selflessness often extended beyond his family and he will be missed by all who were blessed to have known him.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Temiskaming Hospital for their care and kindness during his short stay.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club, where Bill loved to spend his time enjoying the great outdoors and sharing his passion. Donations can be made via e-transfer to temiskamingnordicskiclub@gmail.com or by mail to P.O. Box 2019, New Liskeard ON, P0J1P0.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date and will be open to all those who knew him.

It upsets me that someone like Bill who loved life so much had it taken so quickly and tragically. When I think of Bill, I only picture him in the beautiful outdoors. I’m grateful to him for always staying in touch and checking in with my dad. You will be missed by many, Bill.

I was sorry to hear the news of Bill's death. I have lived around the corner from Bill.here in Cobalt and I was the Safety Officer for Miller Paving North while Bill was an Inspector for the Ministry of Labour. We crossed paths on several occassions and he was always a professional. After Bill and I retired we became friends and would periodically meet at the Silver City cafe here in town. I will miss our friendship and hope you will RIP.

We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Billy's passing. I have nothing but fond memories of our family gatherings in Cobalt as kids, and him living with us in North Bay on O'Brien St when he worked for Hydro. When I think of Bill all I see is his big beautiful smile.
So very sad, you will be truly missed, RIP dear cousin.

Extending our deepest sympathy for your loss. Billy will be remembered by family and friends for his love of life and how deeply he cared each of us. As children we spent so much time together. He’s my cousin, but also my good friend, my oldest friend. Though the years drifted by and our encounters became fewer, when we did meet his first concern was how I was doing. He never failed to ask about my wife and girls. Will miss you Billy, your stories will be remembered for years to come.
