William “Bill” Enouy,

WILLIAM “BILL” ENOUY,

2021

William (Bill) Lawrence Enouy
October 24, 1946 – May 24, 2019It is with sadness that the Enouy family announces the passing of Bill at the Kirkland Lake and District Hospital with his family by his side. Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years Lynda (Tait), his son Drew, and his brother Dave. Also left to mourn him are his sister in law Sandra Schmidt (Brian), brother in law John Tait, and his niece and nephews Joey, Gavin, Megan (Alan), Robert, and Christopher.
Bill will be remembered for his intense dedication to Kirkland Lake through his seven terms on town council, four of those as Mayor. His volunteer work as one of Kirkland Lake’s finest, fiercest, and funniest hockey coaches made him beloved in Kirkland Lake and respected across Ontario. Also known to many as an intense fastball player and coach. Bill spent over 30 years as an elementary school teacher mostly at King George Public School.
Bill had one of the sharpest wit’s and was always the funniest person in any room that he walked into. He loved everything about this small town that he called home and was always battling to make it the best it could be. He believed in working together and trusting people to do the job.
The family would like to thank all of our friends, the staff at KDH, French Family Funeral Home, Emilie Chamaillard, Leona Connelly and the many people who have reached out to send their love or to share a treasured memory. Celebration of Life:

The Cregg family extends our sincere condolences to the Enouy family. Bill, affectionately known to us as ‘Tank’, will be forever remembered for his passion for hockey, baseball and Kirkland Lake. As a coach and as a person he was a fine roll model to us, and we are so thankful for having known him. RIP Bill!

My deepest condolences to the Enouy family. Bill was a great person and as mayor of the town of Hearst I feel fortunate of knowing him as a community leader. He was a true northerner and a man of integrity. I enjoyed working along with him on Mayor Action Group; he always stood for his beliefs and his community. You did a great job Bill. Rest in peace.

Roger Sigouin, March 1, 2021

My sincerest condolences to Linda, Drew and Dave. I was so saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. I fondly remember growing up in Kirkland Lake with Bill and the road hockey games on Durrell Street , playing sports at the QE school grounds and the baseball trips to Rouyn Noranda. Even as a kid Bill was passionate and always tried his best. I know it was the same when he was a teacher, coach and politician. You always knew where he stood. When he was in university he would come to Northern Husky’s hockey games in Southern Ontario and cheer us on. He was a forever friend and whenever we met we would remember those days in the 50’s and 60’s and laugh. I was sad at his passing but smile at his memory.

Brian Lampi, March 1, 2021

Condolences to Lynda, Drew and Dave How very shocked we were to hear of Bill’s passing. KL was very fortunate to have such a fine person like Bill living and working in the community. He will be missed by all of us but not forgotten. Linda (Best) & Bill (Lefty) Hamilton

Linda Hamilton, March 1, 2021

Growing up in Kirkland Lake in the 1950s and 1960s was magical. Life was full of road hockey in the winter, baseball in the summer and tag football squeezed in between. We hung out downtown and at softball and hockey games. Friendships were formed in Grade 1 and grew uninterrupted through to high school graduation when we began to go our separate ways. Whenever I would return to visit my parents I would often bump into Bill and it was if I had never left. Conversations were always comfortable and easy. Its hard to think of anyone who was a bigger booster of Kirkland Lake and of the North in general. My next visit to Kirkland Lake will be a little sadder knowing that there will be one less old friend to chat with. My sincerest condolences to Lynda, Drew and Dave. Bill will be missed, but I assure you, not forgotten.

Frank Vukovich, March 1, 2021

I am so sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. I remember him fondly from the ’70s, when I worked at the Northern Daily News and would amble down to the Princess for a brew or two or three after work. Shared many laughs and even the occasional serious conversation. Andre Wetjen

Andre Wetjen, March 1, 2021

My condolences to the Enouy Family. Tho it has been many years, I have fond memories with Bill and our buds (from the late 50’s) of playing road hockey on those frosty mornings, those hardball games at QE school where we would move the backstop to have a home run fence and those annual mud football games at KL’s Wright Hargreaves Park (now called Civic). KL has lost a good man that continued to love his community for many years.

Don Hayward, March 1, 2021

So very sad to hear, my sincere condolences to Lynda and family. Bill taught us to play fast ball at Civic Park when we were little kids. His enthusiasm was infectious and we couldnt wait to get to the park to spend another day with him. I also had the privilege of playing hockey for Bill. He was a true leader, motivator, and a fierce competitor with a passion for the game. Bill with his antics, wit and humour made it all so much fun, we loved to play for him. Great memories of a great man. I will miss you my friend. Kelly Ryan

My family and I would like to offer our most sincere condolences to Lynda, Drew and other related members of the family. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to an icon of the community, a great mayor, a fantastic teacher but most of all, a friend whom we all dearly loved. I got to know Bill very well in the three years he coached the K.L. Gold Midgets and I was the team manager. He taught the kids a lot about hockey but also the importance of respect and tolerance for others. He stressed the importance of trying to do your best at all times in order to achieve your goals. As mayor, Bill embodied the spirit of Kirkland Lake and was the town’s best ambassador. We had a lot of good times together, a lot of laughs and a few drinks. Bill’s intelligence, sense of humour and quick wit are unmatched. It was an honour and a privilege to have been part of his life. We have lost a great friend and we will miss him dearly. Lynda, Drew and David We are so very sorry to receive the news of Bills passing . My involvement with Bill initially began with his participation in the various sporting activities he did as a youth and later as a student ,athlete , and major contributor to the spirit of KLCVI. As mentioned by so many others his continued presence in the community in so many areas made KL a better place to live ! Later as we became involved in many of the same projects and concerns in the community I came to appreciate even more his passion ,work ethic and particularly his quick and unique sense of humour! He became a good friend and will be missed by so many. Our condolencesBrian and Gale

Sherry Faulkner, March 1, 2021

David, Lynda and family, shocking news to find out that this vital dear soul has left his amazing life far too soon. I was really looking forward to seeing him in June to tell him thank heavens for his heart recovery. Who knew??!! It’s been articulated over and over how much he is thought of. I join in and say that his legacy will outlast us all. Kirkland Lake is a better place for having Bill in it. Sending condolences from the bottom of my heart, Lynn Murray Elliott.

Lynn Murray Elliott, March 1, 2021

My deepest and sincerest condolences to Lynda, Drew ,David and extended families. Back in the mid-fifties I first came across Bill and we shared times at the old Wright Hargreaves ball field in the summers and we moved on to midget baseball, one year of juvenile fastball and on to what we likely considered the big leagues playing for Joe Dash Red Raiders. It was in the men’s league that he likely came to having to prove his mettle in having to catch one of the all time greats in Northern Ontario fastball Larry Hillman. As was the case in subsequent events he did not disappoint. He became most adept most likely due to his competitive spirit and desire to excel. He continued to play many years much to the detriment of his knees. Players who played with him and against him could have nothing but admiration for the way he approached the game. All of that continued into his coaching career with AAA Midgets and AA Midgets as well. He coached the Blue Devils and they only won the league. The coach certainly deserved accolades for that. Played hockey against him in midget. He was actually traded from Legion to Lions but it was not because Legion did not want him. I guess Lions felt that they had to receive a player in exchange for the one they were sending to Legion. He ended up playing on a team that did win the KL midget championship. I really only spent time with him in his active playing days. Then with what followed in his life he was someone you wanted in your corner and you wanted to be in his. Very quick witted was Bill. I recall the manger coming to the mound and the manager asked how the pitcher’s stuff was. Bill’s answer: I don’t know, I have not caught anything yet.(Pitches just were not making it into his glove) It is sort of ironic that a few weeks before I heard of his terminal illness I had said just to make a personal view that of all the people in Kirkland Lake now and over the years that I would put Bill Enouy at the very top of a list of someone who deserved to be looked at in highest esteem for what he did for this town. When I found out a few weeks later it was a sleepless night as I had Bill Enouy on my mind. Was a legend. NO. Wrong tense. IS A LEGEND. Duke(the name how Bill addressed me) conveys the following well wishes: REST IN PEACE MON CAPITAINE.

Our deepest condolences to the Enouy family in this time of loss. Bill has been a solid pillar in the life of Kirkland Lake and his legacy will live on in us all. I knew Bill when he was a teacher and acting principal at King George and I enjoyed the relationship. Bill was forthright and caring and paid careful attention to his responsibilities whatever they might be at a given time. I particularly enjoyed his gruff exterior when he had a point to make and wanted others to pay attention. Bill showed us all his love for people and we all thank him for that. Our town of Kirkland Lake was handsomely rewarded by having Bill Enouy as a citizen who was honest, forthright and caring. His life as a citizen of Kirkland Lake reminds us all that Kirkland Lake is more than gold. It is the sort of place that allows us all to live with dignity and pride, like Bill, and to smile and be in charge together. I enjoyed time I spent at King George observing Bill Enouy’s unique manner as a teacher and as an acting principal. Thanks Bill. Your example lives on as does our town. My condolences to the Enouy family. I have many fond memories of Bill as a coach, and running into him on my visits to KL over the years. I was on the first Legion team that Bill coached in 71/72. I will always remember his passion for every minute of every game. A passion that players did their best to meet.

George Bray, March 1, 2021

My condolences to Lynda and Drew The town and I both owe Bill a huge debt of gratitude. For me, I had the pleasure of serving under Mayor Bill and more importantly I got to live vicariously through Bill with his antics and wit. The town had the benefit of his many political skills but most importantly his “tenaciousness”. Bill was responsible for getting tens of millions of dollars for KL through sheer force of will. All the senior government bureaucrats and politicians knew Bill and remember him “fondly”. If anyone deserves to be remembered with something named after him, it is Bill. The “William Enouy Walking Trail” around the pond has a nice ring to it. Rest in peace, Chief!

Todd Morgan, March 1, 2021

I liked Bill, he always called it as it was! His words honest and his work was good. My condolences to the family. He will be missed.

Just a few days ago I used on of Mr. Enouys signature saying, you guys have verbal diarrhea with my class. Bill taught my husband and I in grade 8 and he was one of the reasons I became a teacher. I cant help but smile when I think of him. I hope a moose called for Bill yesterday. To Lynda, Drew, Dave, and KL I am so sorry for your loss. Dana Wallace (James)

It’s with much sadness that my wife and I read of Bill’s passing. Bill was a grade 6 student in one of my early years of teaching and I remember him as a very astute, conscientious learner able to apply all that he learned. Visiting Bill’s classroom many years later showed me that he continued to model the same skills with his students. i will always remember Bill with warmth, a smile and fondness. Gord Hamden

My condolences to Bills family and close friends. Bill was a straight shooter especially in a hockey arena and as a former referee I think you know what I mean! He also had a sense of humour, sure loved his town and stood tall with both Governments when it came to getting his fair share of funding. RIP Bill
