It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our great aunt Thelma Hakanen at Extendicare on January 29, 2015. Thelma was born in Kirkland Lake on November 12, 1932. She was predeceased by her parents John & Suuna Hakanen; siblings Elsie, Toini, Tyne, Taimi & Toivo; niece Cathy; nephews Tom, Terry, Walter & Peter and great nephews Peter & Stanley. Thelma was a secretary with CIBC for 39 years. She also volunteered for many years as an accountant for Trinity United Church where she was also a devoted member of the congregation. Thelma was also involved with the United Way and many other charities. She enjoyed her rug hooking club and was an avid reader. Thelma is survived by her niece in law Helen O’Brien; great nieces Colleen Bras, Casey O’Connor, Tracey Labbe & Tara Greer; great nephews Pat O’Brien, Dan England & Michael Greer and their respected families including many great great & great great great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Thelma’s memory may be made to the Timiskaming Diabetes Program (PO Box 3000 Kirkland Lake, ON. P2N 3P4), Northern Cancer Research Foundation (41 Ramsey Lake Rd. Sudbury, ON. P3E 5J1), Trinity United Church (PO Box 512 Kirkland Lake, ON. Rest in Peace Aunt Thelma. you were always like a mother to me. I will always value the life lessons you taught me and carry your love with me forever.I love and miss you dearly but i know you are safe in the arms of family reunited in heaven and we will all be together one day. I have very fond memories of Thelma, her sister & brother as they lived around the corner from us. Seen them everyday on our way to school. She was a sweet lady. My deepest sympathy Tara Greer & families. Another Kirkland Lake Legend gone, RIP Thelma
