Zivkovic, Robert

ZIVKOVIC, Robert

1934 - 2022

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Bob, at the Kirkland Lake District Hospital on Thursday, July 28, after a courageous battle with interstitial lung disease.

Bob is survived by his three children, Yvonne (Chris) Robson of Nottingham, England, Andy (Nina) Hoyt of Sudbury, David (Fiona) Zivkovic of Nepean and his five grandchildren, Chris, Ian, Sarah, Cameron and Jacob. He is also survived by his nephew Marian in Croatia. He is predeceased by his loving wife Trudy, and his mother Marija, his father Marko, and his siblings Marko and Anna.

Bob was born in Yugoslavia on May 27, 1934. He served time in the Yugoslavian militia as a youth, and then immigrated to Austria, until he received clearance to come to Canada in 1959. He was sponsored by his uncle Ivan from Larder Lake, and quickly made Northern Ontario his home. Always an adventurous soul, he would embark on a long mining career working in copper, silver, gold and iron ore mines in places such as Whitehorse, Batchewana Bay, Temagami, Virginiatown and Kirkland Lake. He would develop long lasting friendships with most of his colleagues and would often talk about his working escapades all across Canada. He spent 34 years in mining and eventually retired from Macassa Mine in 1995.

Bob was an incredible man, with a huge heart and a penchant for stories. He always had a smile for everyone and was always willing to help his neighbours and friends. Throughout his life, Bob faced countless physical, health and personal challenges; he overcame them all , with a resilience stronger than most of us could imagine. He loved watching wrestling and also "The Young and the Restless", partially to keep his wife happy. More than anything he loved to keep his house and backyard "shipshape" and his 1993 Buick Roadmaster in top notch condition. He was proud of his Croatian heritage, but even moreso of his newfound country. He considered himself a Canadian to the core. Bob will be sorely missed by the community of people he cared for and who loved him with the same dedication.

In keeping with Bob's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to give a sincere thank you to the LHIN team, and especially Timiskaming Home Support and Melanie Loach for allowing Bob to live independently, in his own home, for three comfortable years during difficult times. We would also like to give a sincere thank you to the nurse practitioners at the Kirkland Lake Family Health team, and all of the doctors and nurses at the Kirkland Lake and District Hospital. Lastly, we would like to thank the Kirkland Lake Palliative Care team for allowing Bob to live out his final days with dignity.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliative Care Unit at the Kirkland Lake District Hospital ( 145 Government Rd East, Suite 407, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4), or Timiskaming Home Support (P.O.Box 428, 367 Sutherland Way, Haileybury, ON P0J 1K0), would be appreciated.

I feel so blessed to have spent time with you and your dad last summer. My dad, Anton Jozic, worked with Bob (Bozo) in the mines in the early 60’s and they remained close friends until my dad’s passing in 2019. They are now reunited!

I felt as though I knew Bob my whole life as he graciously welcomed us into his home and shared so many wonderful stories. His kindness will stay with me forever.

Thinking of you and your entire family at this difficult time. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories you have. My deepest condolences, Darlene
