(Rebecca) Anna Giannakopoulos, - Obituaries | Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative

(Rebecca) Anna Giannakopoulos,

(REBECCA) ANNA GIANNAKOPOULOS,

2021

It is with the utmost sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of (Rebecca) Anna Giannakopoulos, known to our lovely community of Kirkland Lake as “Mama” on April 24th, 2018 at the much too young age of 54 years. Surrounded by her loving and devoted family, Mama passed peacefully at Kirkland & District Hospital in the Hospice Suite after a short battle with cancer.Mama is survived by her husband, Constantinos (Kosta) Giannakopoulos of 35 years. They were married in St. John’s, Newfoundland before starting a family of their own with their children, Sarah Athanasia Sasseville, and “Stash” Anastasios Giannakopoulos. She leaves behind her sister Deanna Belec, and her nieces and nephews, Sabrina, Sheldon, Shannon, and Stacy McLean that reside in Kirkland Lake. She will be lovingly remembered by her mother Helen McLean, father Johnny McLean, her sisters Lori McLean, Twila McLean Lafitte, Wanda McLean, her brothers Johnny and Donald McLean, and Joe Bennett, all of Newfoundland.Becoming a grandmother to her beautiful granddaughters Cailyn and Kylee Gratton was one of the most joyous blessings in her life. She claimed the title of “Commercial Grandma” while we referred to her as Nana, and Betti Gratton would be their “Residential Grandma”. In the last 3 years, Mama was blessed with Stash’s girlfriend, Cheryl Alford, and adopted her delightful children Grace and Quinton Pigeau as her grandchildren as well.Mama had a heart of gold and wore it on her sleeve. She never let anyone go without and most often you were fighting a losing battle if you tried to pay for your food! Whether it was a tray of Mille Feuille delivered at Christmas time, Moonshine Cherries at the bar, sending meals in times of sorrow, or catering entire funerals at no cost, Mama was always there and you could always count on her.Even during her courageous fight with cancer, Mama never wanted to put anyone out and would always think of everyone else first. During her 9 week stay at Kirkland & District Hospital, she was so considerate of the wonderful nurses who went all out to ensure she was comfortable and did everything they could to keep her as happy as could be.Without a doubt, Kirkland Lake has lost a monumental member of our community and she will be terribly missed by all of those that she touched. If love could have saved her, she would have lived forever. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she reached and all that she would want is for us to pay it forward.Aquamation:

So sorry for such a profound loss. Anna will be missed dearly by all. Thoughts and prayers Sarah to you and your family. Paul, Marjorie, Chris and Abbey Harvey

Paul and Marjorie Harvey, March 1, 2021

Our deepest condolences on loosing such a “gem” in kirkland Lake. Anna was truly one of a kind and embraced my family during not one both on two very difficult times. She prepared a feast for my father-in laws funeral ensuring that everything was just the way Karl Hochfellner would have liked it and then again she made treats and desserts that Gertrude Hochfellner herself would have envied. We were eternally grateful to have this opportunity to bond with family and friends and share our loss while in the comfort of Anna, her team and her delicious cooking. She graciously refused any payment. We continued our visits with Anna, either at the college or at her restaurant-she always had something special for us. We will remember Anna in our hearts as a true guardian angel who helped and supported us in some of our darkest days. May your memories comfort you during times of sadness and the realization that Anna touched so many lives while she was here with us.

I was deeply saddened to hear of this great ladys illness, and further saddened to hear yesterday of her passing. In my monthly visits to Kirkland Lake for over 20 years, I have met many wonderful people, but a precious few who are as hard working, as warm and welcoming, and as generous. My condolences to Annas family, to her friends and co-workers, and to the whole town.

I went to school with Ann and though I haven’t seen her in person since then, must be almost 40 years, the one thing I see when I think of her is that she was always smiling. Years later when we reconnected on Facebook her smile hadn’t changed, if anything it was even brighter and it was very clear to see that her love and caring had continued to grow with her. She looked so happy. As I looked through the pictures I saw the same smiles on her children and grandchildren. To her family, you are so blessed to have had her for the years you did. My sincere condolences go out to each and every one of you. Hold on to your memories and each other. Ann has certainly left a legacy, a legacy to be so proud of. Rest In Peace my friend.

Karen Alexander, March 1, 2021

May you Rest In Peace my dear, dearest friend. Your bestie, Chrisanne.

My deepest condolences to all of you. She will be missed. Sorry for your loss.

Darren Phillips, March 1, 2021

Stubborn, tough, and hard working are the first things that I would use to describe Anna to a stranger, quickly followed by a story of our event adventures to demonstrate those traits. Then of coarse I would talk endlessly about her generous spirit and how even as a successful business women she was always so generous with her time and heart, through a hug and FOOD Her children are a reflection of her spirit and I am so honoured to have witnessed their strength through these last few months. Mark and I would like to express our deepest condolences to her children, grandchildren and relatives (through blood and love) as we move through our journies without Anna beside us. We will never forget how she made us feel.
