Kalliomäki, Peter

KALLIOMÄKI, Peter

1940 - 2025

It is with broken hearts and profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather Peter Kalliomäki on March 10, 2025 in his 85th year at Blanche River Health surrounded by his loving family. Peter was born on June 9, 1940 in Kemi, Finland during wartime. He was an only child raised by his mother after the loss of his father in the war.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Paula, and his mother Helvi and his step father Manu Kalliomäki.  He is survived by his only daughter, Helen (John Jargiello) his granddaughters Trista, (Ty Wiley), Amber, (Kody Baker) and his precious great grandchildren, Eden, Emma, Zane and Austin. Also by his brother-in-law, Keijo Ikäheimo (Seija) their son, Jukka and his daughter, Sonja Ikäheimo, his sister-in-law Satu Ikäheimo- Tuovinen (Tapio) as well as many cousins all from Finland.

Peter immigrated to Canada in 1952 with his mother to a New World and a new life on a farm in Eby Township. He started working at Lands and  Forest on June 9, 1958 , on his 18th birthday and also the first day the company opened. He was proud to be a tractor foreman there until his retirement.

Peter initiated a pen pal relationship with his future wife Paula, through a Finnish newspaper.  In 1960, Peter flew to Finland to meet Paula, however he was detained by the Finnish army as it was mandatory to complete one year in the army because he was still a Finnish citizen. He was awarded several prestigious marksman awards as a sergeant in the army.

On April 1, 1961 Peter asked Paula to take his hand in marriage. They were married on November 12, 1961 and came to Canada to make a new life.

Peter was truly a jack of all trades and there was nothing he could not do.  Peter leaves behind a legacy of hard work, especially at the cottage on our Island paradise.  Peter enjoyed long walks, biking and cross country skiing. He has a wall of trophies for his many races and biathlons. He also enjoyed skidooing and four wheeling, he loved to fish and sauna at his cottage, but most of all he loved to hunt.

Peter was a very private and reserved family man however, the love will forever resonate in the hearts of those who really knew him. Peter felt alone after losing his mother, his wife and so many of his close Finnish friends. To pass his time he found solace in long scenic drives to Larder Lake,  Englehart, Elk Lake, Matachewan, and Matheson.

In lieu of flowers donations, in Peter’s memory can be made to Kirkland Lake cross country ski runners club.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Blanche River health for making Peter's last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible. An extra special thank you to Michelle Cowie for everything.

Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date.

Näkemiin isä.

I will never forget you. It’s so hard to say goodbye.  Until we meet again.  Forever in my heart.

Minä rakastan sinua, Helen

Peter's Family

So sorry to hear about the loss of your father and grandfather. He was an avid walker around town and we noticed that we hadn't run into him for a long time. We remember him and Paula very well. He took special interest in our children and watched that they got across the highway safely from the school bus at the top of Beaver hill. He blessed them with birthday money and candy for many years as our neighbour. Paula was a fantastic cook and housewife in her retirement, and a good neighbour. Their yard and flowers were always well kept. We are sad to hear of his passing. Rest in Peace Peter.

I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Such a great tribute to him. He was a very private, quiet but hard-working man. I worked with him directly at the Swastika nursery in the early 80's and he taught me lots of practical skills that helped in my forestry career.
