Michael David Oswin,

MICHAEL DAVID OSWIN,

2021

OSWIN, Michael David – It’s with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts, that I announce the passing of MICHAEL DAVID OSWIN, age 58, on December 27, 2020 at Blanche River Health, Kirkland Lake.He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Checkley, and his children; Christopher (Taylor), Michael, Leah (Tanner), stepchildren; Brandon (Evelinn), Trevor (Mallory), and Tyler. He will be deeply missed by his much loved grandchildren, Sophia and Rowyn, and his sister Kathy Oswin-Groh (Brent) and his brother Robert (Sandra). He was a proud and loving uncle to Adam, Aaron, Sarah, and Riley. He is predeceased by his parents Dennis and Patricia. His large, extended family, aunts, uncles, many cousins, all join us in mourning his passing but also celebrate his life with stories and many memories.Born in Toronto, Mike had a typical upbringing, enjoying all the trappings of a middle class life in the city. He played baseball and hockey as a kid and then as a young man, coached teams with his father. A diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he suffered all the highs and lows of “his team” with good humour and eternal optimism.Although Mike had many challenges with his health, he never let it get the better of him. He rose to all challenges with a get it done attitude and wouldn’t back down. He had a softer, artistic side too. He was an enthusiastic drummer and music lover. He attended hundreds of concerts and live music events. He took great joy in sharing these experiences with the ones he loved. A published writer and award winning investor, he was able to evoke raw emotions with his poems, but his real estate articles encouraged others to invest in their dreams.Mike’s final love was Kirkland Lake. Despite his city upbringing, his heart was in the bush. Fishing, hiking, and sitting quietly in nature gave him peace. He will forever wander the sunlit trails and lakes of this beautiful area.Cremation has taken place and there will not be a service at this time. A celebration of life with family is planned for the summer.Mike’s supported Diabetes Canada, Advocate for Northern Animals, and the Muskoka OSPCA, all very worthy causes if you would like to make a donation in his memory.Offer Condolence for the family of Michael David Oswin

My heart goes out to you Kim, Kathy, Rob, and the rest of the family. It was shocking to hear about Mike’s passing; he was only 10 years older than me. It was shocking enough when I found out that he had to go into a nursing home. I always enjoyed seeing Mike whenever he would come out here. I can’t believe he’s gone. This has been a very difficult holiday season. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Hi Kim, Kathy, Rob and family. It was so shocking hearing about Mike passing away only a few days after my mom. He was a great guy and glad he came out to Calgary a few years ago. He will be missed by family and friends, may he rest in peace

Our hearts go out to you Kim. Mike was my first ever Nephew and I enjoyed watching him grow up during my time in Toronto. After moving to Calgary we stayed in touch and I enjoyed hearing his many stories of helping Uncle Don with work on my Grandparents house in Victoria Harbour. We often spoke about his building portfolio in Kirkland Lake and I remember advising him to not take on too much risk. Of course he did anyway and became an expert in real estate investment in the area, often interviewed in print and on TV. It was so sad to see this vibrant individual have so many health problems which eventually put him into a nursing home. Kim, you were the star in his life. Ive never heard him as happy as he was with tales of your joined families. He loved you all. Micheal, you will be missed.

Michaels sister Kathy has been one of my closest friends since grade 4, so I have known Michael for decades. My most recent memory of Michael is from his nieces (Sarah) confirmation. I remember thinking how wonderful it was that Mike had found such a lovely devoted wife, and he seemed so happy to expand his family. Though separated by geography, Michael, Kathy and Robbie made it a priority to get together. Please accept my condolences on this huge loss. Michael touched so many lives.

To my old friend and teammate, in Hockey and Baseball, I am saddened to hear of your passing and the suffering you endured the last few months. I am thankful our paths crossed in our earlier years as we were able to play our favorite games on the same teams, coached by your Father. Your dad was one of my biggest supporters. He always asked me to play on his teams, I said yes as I knew I would have at least one familiar face to play alongside in Winter and Summer. We were able to establish a good friendship with each other and with our families in between the respective seasons. I am proud to call you my friend and what you accomplished in your life. I knew your taste in music so when I hear certain songs, I will think of you, look up, say Hi and will smile when I look at the pictures of our teams. Now you can rest easy Mike, put your feet up and wait for the Leafs to finally win it all as I know you will still be watching. Give your dad a hug for me. I send my condolences to your family members, my thoughts and prayers are with all of them.
