It is with profound sadness we share that John Stanley Emms threw his last cast on Friday, April 12, 2024, after a long hard-fought battle with health challenges.
John’s Wife Pauline, loved Mother Belva Ames Emms, Sister Diane Gillett (Ross) Sister Hazel Emms, Brother Stan Emms Jr (Angela) and Father Stanley Emms Sr predecease him.John is survived by his Son Michael and Daughter Anne. His Sister Carolyn (Ron) O’Neil, and Brother Don Emms (Gwen). His Stepdaughters; Michelle (Gilbert) Contant, Kathy (Brian) August and Noella Labine-Bustraen. His Grandchildren, Jenny, Joshua and Jordan Emms, Kolby Emms, David Contant and Jennifer McGillivray, Elijah, and Isaac Bustraen, Tyler and Riley August. He also has several Great Grandchildren.
John grew up in Swastika and learned to work hard at his father’s lumber mill at a young age. This work ethic remained one of John’s strongest influences throughout his life, including his many proud years with Adams Mine and everything he took on after. John, along with several Round Lake Residents, worked tirelessly to set up a strong Association of volunteers who worked with various levels of Government to ensure that the quality of the water and the safety of the roads, etc., would continue to provide a safe place for people to live and enjoy for years to come. Residents, new and old, have John and that hard working group to thank for so much. He was always ready to help, and he will be missed by his many friends at the lake.
His dedication to Polly was an inspiration. He loved his dogs like best friends. And, when he found himself alone for the first time in his life with Polly’s passing, he found the next love of his life in a little black cat called Pepe. When he held out a hand he found a paw. He was a proud alumnus of the Holy Name Hockey Team, a hard hitting baseball player, a champion horseshoe player, a Snowbird shuffle board winner and one of the best Fishermen on the Lake. Golfer, not so much. A farmer at heart, he grew flowers, trees, grass and had the best garden around. In his latter years he would plant rows of various vegetables and give most of them away. John always gave more than he received, in every respect. He was kind. He was generous. He loved to laugh. He loved to have people visit. He teased that he was in search of a Harem of three. Always in fun. He was shy. We all knew that if three women ever showed up for the job he would have had a heart attack.
We would like to send enormous thanks to so many. To the friends and family who have supported John over the years of challenges. Nora Barker, you are a special soul and John valued your friendship. Deborah Hutchinson, you kept John mobile and he thought the world of you. To Shannon Carey and her legion of committed and caring people who were the reason that John could remain in his home for as long as he did. Lisa, you were a true support and friend. The EMS team who made weekly checks. The incredible people at TPR who welcomed him to his new home and became such caring friends in his short stay. Maryann, your help and genuine caring for people was above and beyond! To the Nurses and Doctors at the Kirkland Lake Hospital, and in the recent weeks, the ICU Team, and Doctors McPherson and Moore for their vigilance in John’s care. Betty Smallwood and the Palliative Team who created a compassionate and comfortable environment for John and all of us supporting him. Dr Moore, your generosity and compassion will never be forgotten.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in John’s name can direct their donation to the Palliative Care Team at the Kirkland Lake Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and his Family will honour John in the warmth of the Summer at his Lake.
