BROUGHTON, James

1932 - 2013

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of James Herbert (Bert) Broughton at the age of 81 years. Bert died at Extendicare, Haileybury on February 12, 2013 after an extended fight with Lewy Body disease, a form of dementia. Bert was the beloved husband for 57 years, of Joan Marie Broughton (neé Hoffman). He was predeceased by his parents Edna (neé Dyer) and William Broughton, sister June and brother-in-law Mike Slauenwhite, and brothers Kenneth and Bruce (Liberty). Bert will be greatly missed by his sister Velda Gillis (Don). A proud father, he will be lovingly remembered by daughter Sandra Broughton (of North Bay), son James and daughter-in-law Christine Broughton (neé Vonhone) (of Carleton Place) and daughter Shari Broughton (of Temiskaming Shores). Bert Broughton was born in Listowel, Ontario on February 3, 1932, the oldest of five children. He moved to Temagami with his family when he was 16 and met his future wife, Joan. They were married on October 8, 1955. Bert worked in Temagami in various capacities including Marty Taylor's Marine Sales and service, Copperfield Mine and Sherman Mine. In his off hours, he enjoyed curling, golfing, camping and traveling. He also loved working on crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles. Though a quiet man, he had a sly sense of humour and a bright endearing smile that lit up the room. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a future date. If desired donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. The Broughton family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to Dr. Don Davies and the staff of Extendicare for caring for Bert during his illness and making his final days comfortable.
