AYOTTE, Gustave

1921 - 2007

Gustave "Gus" Ayotte After a courageous battle with cancer Gustave Pierre Ayotte passed away peacefully on June 14th, 2007 with family by his side. Gus was born on July 15, 1921, the eldest of eight children of Philomene and Maurice Ayotte. He married Mildred "Millie" Pennock on February 24, 1941 and together they raised eight children. During the war Gus worked in the mines in Matachewan and Sudbury before returning to New Liskeard to operate the family farm. In later years Gus owned and operated a number of businesses including the New Arena Restaurant, Gus' Groceteria, Millie's Place Confectionary and the New Liskeard Meat Market. In retirement Gus enjoyed many years at their villa in Acapulco, Mexico with Millie and cherished annual winter visits by family and friends. Whether it was at the kitchen table, in the meat shop, at Sam's or in Acapulco, Gus always enjoyed a game of cribbage. And if someone wasn't up for a game of crib Gus would always settle for an arm wrestle. As much as he enjoyed winning, nothing gave Poppa Gus more pleasure than when one his grandchildren won their first game of cribbage or beat him at an arm wrestle. Gus was known for his positive outlook on life, his larger than life character, and the way he always helped those in need. Gus is survived by sons Roger (Cecelia), Jimmy, Roland, Rick; daughters Linda (Leo Lariviere), Theresa (Peter deLuis), Suzanne (Curtis Block), Nancy (Guy Lavergne); daughter-in-law Polly Ayotte; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother Armand and sister Angela Benoit. He was predeceased by his parents Philomene and Maurice; brothers Donat and Albert; sisters Gilberte Gravel, Beatrice Maille-Desjardins, Therese and grandson Michael Ayotte. Gus also enjoyed time spent with good friend Lorne Bigelow and truly appreciated the care he received at the Temiskaming Lodge from his "beauties". Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Perrin Funeral Chapel and cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in New Liskeard at 11:00 A.M. on Monday June 25, 2007 with a celebration of Gus' life to follow at the Sacred Heart Church Basement at 12:00 noon. Condolences and donations to the Daffodil Lodge may be left at www.perrinfuneralchapel.com.
